Goat love; we’ve all been there. OK, maybe not a goat, but what about an attraction to a particularly cute hamster? No? What about your pet dog? Not even after one Guinness too many? OK, we’ll stop, but there’s a point to be explored – about the destructive, uncontrollable nature of human sexuality – and Damian Lewis’ turn last year as a starchitect looking into the abyss of, yes, a goat obsession, staged at the Theatre Royal Haymarket, raised many uncomfortable truths. Starring opposite the electric Sophie Okonedo, Lewis’ performance captured a man’s terror at realizing he is a sexual outlaw trapped in a society where sex, love and marriage have strict, delineated codes.

Official nominations will be announced March 6th. The 2018 Laurence Olivier Awards ceremony will be held on Sunday, April 8, 2018 at the Royal Albert Hall in London. For more information, please visit the Official London Theatre website.

Billions: Most Anticipated Show to Return to Showtime – Feb 14, 2018

New on Showtime: All the Movies and TV Coming in March

Source: Showtime – Photo: Jim Fiscus

We’ve reached that time of the month once more—that time when we look ahead to what we’ll be watching once another page comes off the calendar. The first of our streaming previews for the month of March comes from Showtime, which will be adding some noteworthy television shows and films before you know it. Read on to find out which.

Starting on the TV side of Showtime’s slate, the most anticipated March addition has to be the third season of the channel’s hit original drama Billions, from showrunners Brian Koppelman and David Levien. The series, which Showtime describes as a complex drama about power politics in the world of New York high finance, stars Oscar nominee (and Emmy and Golden Globe winner) Paul Giamatti as shrewd, savvy U.S. Attorney Chuck Rhoades and Emmy and Golden Globe winner Damian Lewis as brilliant, ambitious hedge fund king Bobby “Axe” Axelrod. Billions’ title alludes to the high financial stakes of the show, as Rhoades and Axelrod endeavor to destroy each other, and its latest season finds the two adversaries adjusting to a world that has shifted on its axis since the events of season two. The new season of Billions debuts on Sunday, March 25 at 10 p.m. EST.

Billions‘ Damian Lewis Thinks It’s Weird That You’re Rooting for Bobby Axelrod

by Liam Mathews | TV Guide | February 14, 2018

There are a lot of great shows and movies about bad men from which people take the wrong lesson. Some guys wish they could be feared and respected like Tony Soprano (James Gandolfini) or Walter White (Bryan Cranston). They wish they could live in Mad Men times because “men were men” then. They watch The Wolf of Wall Street and see the criminal excess as aspirational, failing to recognize that it’s a cautionary tale.

Those are exactly the kind of people who watch Billions and shout “Yo Bob-ay!” at Damian Lewis out of passing cars when they see him on the street. Lewis’ character, hedge fund titan Bobby “Axe” Axelrod, is not someone you’re supposed to root for. He’s a greedy crook who made millions by shorting airline stocks while his employees were dying on 9/11. So it’s weird to Lewis when wealthy women come up to him and say “you are playing my husband, did you know that?”

The Red Revolution: What it Really Means to Have Crimson Locks – Feb 12, 2018

New Book Celebrates All Things Ginger

by Murray Scougall | The Sunday Post | February 12, 2018

Despite just 2% of the world’s population having crimson locks, they are over-represented in high-profile public roles.

But it might be too soon for them to have the last laugh, as it’s feared the redhead gene could die out by 2060.

A new book, Ginger Pride – A Red-Headed History Of The World, examines what makes red hair so special – and confirms they really are a unique breed.

“It started off as a look at historical figures with red hair, as I noticed there was a bit of a trend,” explained author and “proud ginger” Tobias Anthony.

“But I decided to widen it to look at other topics.

“One aspect I was really intrigued by was the myth-making, like accusations of being vampires and witches centuries ago.

“Redheads play a hand in almost every aspect of the world as we know it, from Vikings to royalty (by the time Queen Elizabeth I passed, Britain had seen 138 consecutive years of redheads on the throne) to medicine.

Damian Lewis said, “The redhead stock is very high at the moment. This might be a unique moment in recent history, redheads everywhere are doing well – Prince Harry, Ed Sheeran, Julianne Moore, me, Lily Cole.”

“I think once you have this type of myth and aura connected to ginger hair, there’s some attraction to it. There is something that makes you stand out and seems to captivate people in a certain way and it makes sense to want to ride on the coat-tails of that.”

Homeland: Is the CIA Drama Actually Any Good? (A Forensic Investigation)

by Gavin Haynes | The Guardian | February 8, 2018

Source: Showtime – Photo: Everett/Rex Features

We armed our writer with some DVDs and a few cups of coffee and he came back with a definitive answer to one of TV’s biggest unanswered questions. Homeland is famous for two things: Claire Danes’ capacity to act by wobbling her face, and being maddeningly uneven. Terrorists come and go: who could tell a Bibi Hamed from a Saad Massoud in the long game? But inconsistency remains. So as the show resumes later this month, when you look at it across six seasons, is Homeland actually any good? The question has never quite been resolved. Until now. Six seasons, one metric. Goodness.

Season One

UPSIDE

What’s striking now about Homeland’s debut is how slow it is. Rather than what it became – a frantic hail of bullets falling amid a fog of sarin gas – this is a psychological turn about the alienation of a returning PoW.

DOWNSIDE

A climax that’s a touch random. Nicholas Brody (Damian Lewis) attempts to turn the vice president into strawberry jam with his suicide vest, before mammalian evolutionary programming saves the day, via a last-minute phone call from his teenage daughter – as if The Godfather climaxed with the Monty Python foot coming down on Michael Corleone.

Verdict: 57% good

Richard II of England: Potential for Damian? – Feb 2, 2018

Richard II or Bolingbroke: Potential Work Lined Up for Damian?

by Jake Coyle | SF Gate | February 2, 2018
by Dalya Alberge | The Guardian | August 12, 2017

L: Richard II of England – R: Damian Lewis

Veteran director James Ivory claims financiers think he’s crazy for attempting the Shakespeare adaptation of Richard II. Despite 50 years of critical acclaim and Oscar recognition, plus British actors Tom Hiddleston and Damian Lewis lined up to star in his production, financiers are refusing to part with their money. “They look at you like you’re crazy,” he said. “There is an assumption that there is no money to be made from such an investment. A Shakespeare film does not grab the hearts of financiers, I can tell you,” he says. “At the moment I’m very optimistic it will happen.”

For the past several years and after stalled efforts, Ivory still hopes to direct a film version of Shakespeare’s Richard II, with a script penned by Chris Terrio (“Argo,” ”Justice League”) and envisions feature roles for Tom Hiddleston as Richard II and Damian Lewis as Bolingbroke.  Not all that unheard of since according to Damian’s filmography, he voiced Bolingbroke on a Richard II radio broadcast. In fact, James Ivory proposes Damian for the role of Bolingbroke in this March, 2018 video.

Both actors have extensive experience of Shakespeare. Hiddleston, who starred in the BBC’s award-winning The Night Manager is playing Hamlet this month in a Branagh stage production. Lewis appeared with the Royal Shakespeare Company before television dramas such as Homeland, Wolf Hall and Billions.

Follow in the Footsteps of Damian’s Filming Location in Kent – Jan 28, 2018

11 Kent Filming Locations You Can Visit and Walk in the Footsteps of Your Favourite Actors

by Sophie Madge | KentLive | January 28, 2018

Visitors can actually explore the famous locations for themselves.

Penshurst Place

Penshurst Place is a historic building near Tonbridge, Kent, 32 miles (51 km) south east of London, England. It is the ancestral home of the Sidney family, and was the birthplace of the great Elizabethan poet, courtier and soldier, Sir Philip Sidney. The original medieval house is one of the most complete surviving examples of 14th-century domestic architecture in England. Part of the house and its gardens are open for public viewing.

The stately home in west Kent has been the setting for a number of TV shows and films. BBC Two’s adaptation of Wolf Hall was partly filmed at the Elizabethan house, with the Queen Elizabeth Room, The Tapestry Room, The Solar, The Long Gallery, and The Crypt all used for scenes in the TV adaptation.

Visitors can go to Penshurst Place and follow in the footsteps of Mark Rylance, Claire Foy and Damian Lewis as they walk around the rooms.
