Damian Lewis Confirmed for Stephen Sondheim’s ‘Old Friends’ Gala

A Celebration in Aid of the Sondheim Foundation

by Gingersnap | damian-lewis.com | March 3, 2022

The Old Friends gala is a celebratory salute to the legacy of the legendary Pulitzer Prize-winning composer and lyricist Stephen Sondheim’s life and work in a one-night-only performance for the Sondheim Foundation. With over 30 Broadway and West End all-star cast members confirmed, audiences will be enthralled with appearances by performers who have starred in Sondheim’s work over the decades such as, Damian Lewis, Dame Judi Dench, Bernadette Peters, Imelda Staunton, Hannah Waddingham, Elaine Paige, Michael Ball, Daniel Evans, Petula Clark, Bonnie Langford, Adrian Lester and Clive Rowe, with more names yet to be announced. Dame Judi Dench is said to be performing ‘Send in the Clowns’ from A Little Night Music and Bernadette Peters will perform ‘Losing My Mind’ from Follies.

As for Damian’s act, we can only speculate at this point that he will reprise a song he sang during his 1998 performance in Into the Woods. Damian played both the Wolf and Cinderella’s Prince singing ‘Hello, Little Girl’ and ‘Agony,’ but also sang with Company on the following numbers: ‘Opening: Into The Woods,’ ‘First Midnight,’ ‘Second Midnight,’ ‘Opening: So Happy’ and the ‘Finale: Act One and Act Two.’  Visit our Gallery here for program information about that production.

The fundraising event will take place at The Sondheim Theatre on Shaftesbury Avenue in London’s West End on May 3, 2022 at 8:00 p.m. There will be a 26-piece orchestra conducted by Alfonso Casado Trigo for the event. Tickets go on sale March 15 here.

Damian Lewis in Cymbeline

by Tristram Kenton | The Guardian | November 13, 2020

Cymbeline by William Shakespeare
Damian Lewis as Posthumus Leonatu
Royal Shakespeare Theatre
Venue: Stratford-upon-Avon
1997

Cymbeline, King of Britain when Augustus Caesar was Emperor of Rome, has a daughter, Innogen, and two sons who were stolen in infancy. The queen, his second wife, has a son, Cloten, whom Cymbeline wishes Innogen to marry, but she has secretly married the commoner Posthumus Leonatus who was adopted as an orphan and raised in the Cymbeline family. Cymbeline banishes Posthumus to Rome, where he meets Iachimo, who wagers with him that he can seduce Innogen. Arriving in Britain, Iachimo realizes that she is incorruptible, but, hiding in her bedroom, obtains evidence which convinces Posthumus that he has won the wager. Posthumus orders his servant Pisanio to kill Innogen at Milford Haven, but instead Pisanio advises her to disguise herself as Fidele, a page. In Wales, she meets her brothers, who were stolen twenty years before by the banished nobleman Belarius. Cloten pursues Innogen to Wales in Posthumus’ clothes, determined to rape her and kill Posthumus. Instead, he is killed by one of her brothers, and his decapitated body laid beside Innogen, who has taken a potion that makes her appear dead. When she revives, Innogen/Fidele joins the Roman army, which is invading Britain as a result of Cymbeline’s failure to pay tribute to Rome. Posthumus and the stolen Princes are instrumental in defeating the Roman army. A final scene of explanations leads to private and public reconciliation.

Theater of War Productions Presents Virtual Event: Oedipus The King

by Gingersnap | damian-lewis.com | August 26, 2020

UPDATE: View images of the virtual play event in our Gallery here

The Oedipus Project presents dramatic readings by acclaimed actors of Sophocles’ Oedipus the King as a catalyst for powerful, guided conversations about the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic upon individuals, families, and communities. Oedipus the King is a timeless story about arrogant leadership, ignored prophecy, and a pestilence that ravages the city of Thebes. At the time the play was first performed in 429 BC, the audience would have been reeling in the wake of a plague. Seen through this lens, Oedipus the King seems as relevant now as it was in its own time.

This special live event will feature performances by Kathryn Hunter, Damian Lewis, Lesley Sharp, Clarke Peters, Jason Isaacs, Nyasha Hatendi, Brian F. O’Byrne, and Nick Holder. Translated, directed and facilitated by Bryan Doerries.

The Zoom link to the free event will be distributed and available to registered attendees starting two days prior to the event. You must register for free tickets here.

Helen and Damian Toy With The Idea of Making West End Appearance Together – April 9, 2020

On Stage Together Next Year?

by Baz Bamigboye | Daily Mail | April 9, 2020

Helen McCrory and Damian Lewis have been toying with the idea of making their first West End appearance together — hopefully next year, if their respective upended commitments will permit.

The couple fell in love when both were cast in the play Five Gold Rings at the off-West End Almeida Theatre back in 2003.

‘Damian and I would love to do something on stage together,’ McCrory told me. ‘We’ve been in long discussions.’

Tantalisingly, she added: ‘Rights are being bought’ to a 20th-century classic (which could be a comedy) that she declined to name until contracts are signed.

‘We’ve done so many other things that have taken us to lots of different places, and in lots of different directions,’ she noted.

Things such as his roles in Homeland, Wolf Hall and Billions.

And her stellar cast of characters: the glamorous but lethal Aunt Polly in Peaky Blinders; Narcissa Malfoy in Harry Potter; and now Sonia Woodley, the QC who represented Charles Ingram — aka the ‘Coughing Major’ — in Quiz.

The TV mini-series, sublimely written and directed by James Graham and Stephen Frears, respectively, will be broadcast on ITV for three consecutive nights from April 13. The cast is pretty awesome, too.

Damian and Helen Enjoy Evening at the Theatre – Sept 29, 2019

Cracked: Mental Illness and Addiction

by Gingersnap | damian-lewis.com | September 29, 2019

Damian and Helen were in attendance for One Voice: Cracked on Sunday, September 29, 2019 at the Old Vic Theatre in London. Despite an apparent injury with her arm in a sling, Helen performed on stage as Damian supported from the audience.

Comedian, writer, actor and presenter Russell Brand curated the evening described as a night of seven one-off solo performances written in response to the growing conversation and changing attitudes around mental health and addiction.

One Voice is a series of newly written monologues, spoken word and song from leading writers and performed by acclaimed actors – theatre in its rawest form. Without scenery, costume, and with nothing to rely on but words, One Voice reminds us what a single voice can do.

Performers included Russell Brand, Scarlett Curtis, Mr Gee, Denise Gough (People, Places & Things, Angels in America) and Helen McCrory (Peaky Blinders, MotherFatherSon), with music from multi award-winning trumpeter Alison Balsom.

Writers for Cracked were Russell Brand (Recovery: Freedom from our Addictions, Re:Birth); Scarlett Curtis (Curator of Feminists Don’t Wear Pink & other lies and It’s Not Ok to Feel Blue & other lies, co-founder of Pink Protest); Lena Dunham (Girls, Not That Kind of Girl); Mr Gee (Rhyme & Reason, ‘Poet Laureate’ on The Russell Brand Show); Dr. Gabor Maté (In the Realm of Hungry Ghosts: Close Encounters with Addiction); Matthew Perry (The End of Longing, Friends) and Kate Tempest (The Bricks That Built the Houses, Let Them Eat Chaos).
