New trailer and UK release date for ‘Will’

The UK release date for ‘Will’ has been changed to November 4th.

A 2nd UK trailer for Will has also been released and is available in HD. It’s similar to the long form trailer that was first released, but with fewer shots of Damian. It’s still pretty spoilerish.

Liverpool to host LFC Istanbul film ‘Will’ world premiere

THE world premiere of a British film centred on Liverpool FC’s 2005 Champions League success will be staged in the city.

A cast including Oscar-nominated Bob Hoskins and Band of Brothers actor Damian Lewis will appear at the red carpet screening of comedy drama Will.

The film – which features cameos from Kenny Dalglish, Steven Gerrard and Jamie Carragher – follows orphan Will Brennan, who runs away to Istanbul to watch the famous victory in memory of his dead father.

Producers confirmed plans to hold the movie’s premiere at the Liverpool One Odeon on October 16, ahead of its general release five days later.

US director Ellen Perry said she was “thrilled” to launch the film in the city.

Described as an “underdog story” the script was originally written without a specific club in mind until Emmy-nominated Perry became aware of Liverpool’s triumph, turning around a 3-0 half-time deficit to favourites AC Milan to win the Champion’s League Final.

She said: “The more we learned about it, the more it seemed the perfect setting for the culmination of Will’s journey.

“The anthem ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’ encapsulates Will’s story, and exhorts one and all to never give up, to never quit on your friends and family, to always strive to be your best. That’s not a bad outlook.

“Of course, there are many other big clubs in Europe and around the world. But Liverpool made the most sense. The Istanbul final made even greater sense.”

Dalglish confessed he struggled with his lines, while a “shy” Gerrard was helped to film his scene.

The Anfield captain admitted: “It was difficult for me because you’re out of your comfort zone. I gave it my best so we’ll see how it turns out.”

WILL is set to be released in UK cinemas on October 21.

Actor Damian Lewis: I jumped at chance to meet Steven Gerrard

ACTOR Damian Lewis said he was drawn to playing the lead role in Will because he would get to meet Steven Gerrard.

The Band of Brothers star, who plays Will’s dad, Gareth, admitted it was a challenge to nail the Scouse accent.

Lewis said: “I am a Liverpool fan and was drawn to the film for different reasons – one of them being I would get to meet Steven Gerrard.

“I’m a Londoner, not a Scouser, but I have always supported Liverpool FC.

“Liverpudlians are very quick in terms of their vocal patterns, they are very quick-witted, they are cheeky and I tried to find elements of that.”

Co-star Bob Hoskins admitted his interest in football is “minimal”.

He said: “When I was a kid, my uncle had two daughters and he was an Arsenal fanatic and he used to drag me every Saturday morning to the Arsenal match and the stands.

“All I saw of football was people’s knees because they were all standing up so I never saw any of it and it turned me right off the sport.”

Vertigo Films Acquires WILL for UK release, 21 October 2011!

London – 08 August 2011 – Vertigo Films are proud to announce the wide UK theatrical release of WILL. This much anticipated film that tells the story of a young boy’s emotional journey across Europe to watch the football team that he loves will be released in the UK on the 21st of October.

Eleven-year-old Will Brennan’s (Perry Eggleton) life is turned upside down when his long-absent father (Damian Lewis) reappears with tickets to the 2005 Champions League Final in Istanbul. But when fate intervenes, Will runs away to Istanbul for the biggest soccer match of the year, searching for meaning in a world that seems to have abandoned him.

Starring Damian Lewis (Band of Brothers, and Showtime’s upcoming Homeland), Bob Hoskins (A Christmas Carol, Who Framed Roger Rabbit) and Alice Krige (Chariots of Fire, Star Trek: First Contact) this heartfelt underdog story also features cameos by Liverpool Football Club manager Kenny Dalglish, and superstar footballers Jamie Carragher and Steven Gerrard.

The Chief Executive of GalataFilm, Taha Altayli, said, “We’re excited to be working with Vertigo which had two Oscar nominated films last year. We know that Vertigo’s expertise will find the audience and acclaim that this fabulous family film deserves.”

WILL is a co-production between Istanbul based GalataFilm and LA/UK-based Strangelove Films and is an original screenplay by Zack Anderson and Ellen Perry. It is also the feature directorial debut film of the Emmy-nominated Perry. Her fellow producers include Altayli and Anderson, Stewart Till, Stephen Moffitt, Mustafa Karahan, Muharrem Gulmez, Timothy Nicholas and Mark Cooper.

‘Will’ update

There’s a fantastic little review – and new promo still – of Will at TheHuffingtonPost.com. According to the article, it is still looking for a US distributor.

This week I went to a screening of a film which is struggling to get a major distributor to take it on and arrange for it to be seen by the mainstream American film audience. And, folks, it was absolutely the most wonderful, engaging and enjoyable movie I have seen this year!

I knew nothing about the movie when I attended the screening, but at the end I found myself crying and cheering and turning to the people in the room to enthuse about what we had just viewed. It’s called Will and was produced by (among many others) two young people, Ellen Perry and Zack Anderson, who also co-wrote it and saw Ellen Perry direct it. It’s a family film with a soccer theme, and you would think that with the red-hot soccer excitement throughout the world last week for the women’s soccer finals, astute businessmen would grab such a heartwarming movie with this theme… but thusfar none has stepped up. We must change that. …

After the screening I spoke with the filmmakers, Ellen and Zack, and learned that this film, which looks like a $50-million family adventure, was actually made for about one-tenth of that budget. A smart and strategic Turkish investor at GaletaFilms realized that it would be a fine showcase for that dynamic country and provided the bulk of the financing. A grueling 40-day shoot, of six-day weeks with strict British children’s hours, I can only imagine how exhausted the cast and crew must have been. Ellen Perry is a huge talent; this is her first dramatic feature to direct, but I now have seen her two well-received documentaries, including The Fall of Fujimori, which opened at Sundance and was nominated for an Emmy and also Best Screenplay by the Writer’s Guild (with Zack also receiving a nomination as co-writer), and her first documentary, the amazing Great Wall Across the Yangzte.

Five years later, the picture Will is done… and much to my surprise and chagrin, the big film companies are not fighting for the right to release it to an emotionally starved, waiting world audience! Hey, Sony… Universal… Paramount… MGM… and especially you, Disney, here is a heartwarming, commercial and absolutely terrific film which will win plaudits and viewers worldwide. It will certainly be on my Academy list of best pictures of the year. I can’t wait to see it again… and I bet that those two young daughters (and huge soccer fans) in the White House will feel the same way.

(Update: Click here for a download.) According to the distributor, “there is no release date planned for Will yet in the US or the UK” (the November date listed on their website is incorrect) but that a film release could happen “sometime towards the end of this year to early next year.” According to Cinando.com, the film will make its debut at the Cannes Film Market this May.

  • The Evening Standard offers a few more details on the film Driven in an article about filmmakers David Leon and Rashid Razaq:

Leon, who lives in east London, said they were all “tremendously proud” to have triumphed at the festival co-founded by De Niro, one of his cinema heroes – although work commitments meant none of the team was able to accept the prize from the Hollywood star in person.

The honour comes as Leon and Razaq, 31, are fundraising for their first full-length feature script, Driven, a crime thriller-meets-love story with a budget closer to £1million. Shooting is scheduled to start next year, with Band Of Brothers star Damian Lewis.

The film, which Leon will direct alone, is set in 1989 against the backdrop of the fall of the Berlin Wall. It tells the story of a young man facing the moral dilemma of whether to follow his family into crime.
