The photo above shows Damian Lewis in “fancy dress” as a knight in the BBC production of Shakespeare Retold – Much Ado About Nothing. This seems a fitting image because Damian is currently in Northern Ireland filming the role of a “dastardly knight” in Your Highness, the medieval comedy directed by David Gordon Green.

Here’s some news about Your Highness:

  • Spoilers! Leanne Cari’s preview of Your Highness for Cinema Blend includes this synopsis of the film’s storyline:

Throughout history, tales of chivalry have burnished the legends of brave, handsome knights who rescue fair damsels, slay dragons and conquer evil. But behind many a hero is a good-for-nothing younger brother trying just to stay out of the way of those dragons, evil and trouble in general. Danny McBride and James Franco team up for an epic comedy adventure set in a fantastical world- Your Highness. As two princes on a daring mission to save their land, they must rescue the heir apparent’s fiancée before their kingdom is destroyed.

Thadeous (McBride) has spent his life watching his perfect older brother Fabious (Franco) embark upon valiant journeys and win the hearts of his people. Tired of being passed over for adventure, adoration and the throne, he’s settled for a life of wizard’s weed, hard booze and easy maidens. But when Fabious’ bride-to-be, Belladonna (Zooey Deschanel), gets kidnapped by the evil wizard Leezar (Justin Theroux), the king gives his deadbeat son an ultimatum: Man up and help rescue her or get cut off.

Half-assedly embarking upon his first quest, Thadeous joins Fabious to trek across the perilous outlands and free the princess. Joined by Isabel (Natalie Portman)–an elusive warrior with a dangerous agenda of her own–the brothers must vanquish horrific creatures and traitorous knights before they can reach Belladonna. If Thadeous can find his inner hero, he can help his brother prevent the destruction of his land. Stay a slacker, and not only does he die a coward, he gets front row seats to the dawn of an all-new Dark Ages.

  • Studio-NI reports that extras are still being called for Your Highness with Damian Lewis, currently filming in Northern Ireland:

The good news is that a large number of the cast and crew are Studio NI members.
Don’t worry if you haven’t gotten the call yet – new people are being recruited all the time, and there are still a few weeks to go…The bad news: everyone employed must sign a contract with a small-print confidentiality clause. Thus, the buzz that can raise morale in the local film industry (and make or break a film) is being killed.

  • The Mail Online is featuring this article about actors Damian Lewis and Dominic West:

Which old Etonian influenced Damian Lewis?

Actor Damian Lewis, 38, says a great performance influenced him – Dominic West playing Hamlet at Eton, aged 17.

West starred in the cult cop show, The Wire, as tipsy, womanising detective Jimmy McNulty.

After playing Hamlet at Eton – Lewis was a contemporary – his English master said he should consider ‘doing this as a job’.

At 39, West’s maybe a wee bit mature to play the immature Dane but fiddle de dee, as they say. After Baltimore, Elsinore?

Just got a call from the extras company there. They would like to have me as an extra in James Franco’s movie. Happy days you say? Yes I say.

Essentially I’m an albino tribeswoman who, along with her tribesy friends, kidnaps the princes and does terrible things to them. I can’t say I’m overly thrilled about wandering around Belfast in an animal skin bikini in the middle of September but I’m sure it’ll be a laugh.

  • Click here to access the “Press Kit” for The Escapist including these comments from Damian Lewis about his sinister character Rizza:

“It’s an important but small role,” admits Damian of his character. “I see Rizza as the evil centre of the prison. He’s a self styled prison boss, he’s running the prison from the inside. He has to control his younger brother who’s a loose cannon.”

“Rizza is an unusual kind of figure in the prison: the prison and the people inside the prison were his boys and that’s how he wanted it to be. He never wanted his authority challenged; he’d do anything to maintain that status quo. It’s quite an effeminate role and that ties in nicely with the brother. There’s malevolence but effeteness at the same time.”

Damian especially enjoyed the moral ambiguities of Rizza. “He’s very affectionate about his brother – he’d do anything to protect him but he’s utterly ruthless. You have to be to remain at the top in this setting. He does business daily through violence and intimidation, but I liked the idea that there was something effeminate about him – something preening and self-regarding. He’s a thug but also a weird feminine sophistication.”

And why did Damian Lewis (Eton, RSC) win roles in two series of Life?

So grim is this state of affairs that America’s National Public Radio interrogated the makers of Life, who confessed: “What we found out about English actors is that they’re funny. We had a hard time finding an American tough guy who will be the butt of the joke, whereas Damian has no problem doing it. He’s like half Stan Morrow and half Steve McQueen.” It turns out that slightly imperfect looks and even British bad teeth are more convincing. The Life producers added: “You could argue that in our system, if you’re a young actor who isn’t leading-man handsome, you’re probably not going to get nurtured the way that you would in England, just based on talent.
