Castle Building Stars Again
The British Film and Television Industry have once again used B3Burgess Cardiff Office, Castle Buildings, for one of its productions.Last year part of the new Dr Who series was filmed on the roof. Last week a large film crew making a new British film The Baker visited us.The film stars Damien Lewis, Michael Gambon and Kate Ashfield and is due for cinema release early next year.
The scenes at our office involved a gunman trying to assassinate the lead character “Milo” played by Damien Lewis who is in his apartment on the top floor of the building opposite ours in Womanby Street. The film crew used storerooms on the top floor of “The Gatekeeper” a Weatherspoons bar and converted them into Milo’s apartment. The assassin uses the roof of Castle Buildings to fire through the window of Milo’s lounge.
To create the correct effects of the gunshot the special effects guy (who had previously worked on Superman and a number of James Bond movies) fired powder filled pellets from a special rifle using the window behind Nicole Kinnaird’s desk in the Architectural Divisions Office. This created bullet holes in specially fitted sugar glass in the windows opposite. This was filmed from inside the apartment giving the effect of the bullet passing through the glass.
The gunman was then filmed assembling his rifle on the roof and firing over our parapet down into the apartment. He used a real (disarmed) weapon an M16 Armalite with snipers conversion and a large silencer. Scandinavian actor Nikolaj Coster-Waldau plays the assassin. The filming took place over three days with a crew of 50 and the two actors mentioned above. The Baker is due for cinema release January 2007 so lets all keep an eye out for it. Lets hope Castle Buildings second starring role is as successful as the first
