Chuck and Axe Give Their Enemies ‘A Proper Sendoff’

by Dana Feldman | Forbes | April 14, 2019

Ok, so there may not be dragons on Billions but the merciless way in which these characters slay their enemies on this show is just as frightening. This week’s episode “A Proper Sendoff” begins with both Chuck (Paul Giamatti) and Axe (Damian Lewis) struggling to maintain their power. Those that cross them quickly learn what a mistake it is to underestimate either.

At a dinner in the opening scene with Chuck, Wendy (Maggie Siff), Axe and Rebecca Cantu (Nina Arianda), Wendy is given some very good advice. And, she needs all the help she can get as she copes with the fallout of Chuck’s announcement to the world about their proclivity to whips and chains.

Billions Season 4 Episode 5 Recap: New York Times – April 14, 2019

Best Served Cold

by Sean T. Collins | New York Times | April 14, 2019

This week on “Billions,” revenge is the order of the day. All right, fine: Every week on “Billions,” revenge is the order of the day.

But this episode is special even so. Written by Michael Russell Gunn and directed with gangster-movie brio by Matthew McLoota, the episode has Axe and Chuck conduct some of their most brutally total takedowns of their enemies yet. What, you thought dispatching Grigor Andolov and outfoxing Jack Foley and Jock Jeffcoat was going to keep these two happy? Don’t you remember that happiness is nothing more than a moment before you need more happiness?

Longtime “Billions” watchers will remember that Bobby Axelrod made his fortune on 9/11, which he was lucky enough to have survived while many of his colleagues perished. Since then, he has funded the college tuition of the children of those who died in hopes of a sort of karmic offset. Now those children are adults, and many are successful in their own right.

Chuck and Axe Throw Their Power Around Simply Because They Can

by Kyle Fowle | Entertainment Weekly | April 14, 2019

It’s the day of Jack Foley’s funeral here on Billions, which thankfully doesn’t mean it’s a somber day. Billions doesn’t do somber. Instead, the day sees more power moves, more backstabbing, and more personal reckoning. As the opening scene states visually, cross-cutting between Foley’s coffin being incinerated and a pizza being cooked in an oven, life must go on. One man’s death is another man’s opportunity, after all.

Chuck and Wendy are having dinner with Axe and Rebecca, and it’s still weird to see Axe and Chuck in this kind of setting, where everything is friendly. Things don’t stay friendly for long, but that’s because Wendy and Chuck are at odds. The night is still young when she rips into Chuck again for exposing the details of their sex life, and what she lays out makes a lot of sense. She says she’s no longer a blank slate, she can’t be “Wendy” and just build up from there in the way she needs to, depending on whom she’s interacting with, be it an investor or a patient. “Now they just know all of it,” she says, which is fair. But Rebecca sees it another way. She sees people so concerned with their own problems that they’ll forget about Wendy in due time. She’s got a point too, and when she agrees to give Wendy a blank slate in their relationship, Wendy finds a new friend.

The Payback

by Sarene Leeds | Vulture | April 14, 2019

Billions does not have time for you to read between the lines: As soon as the James Brown tune “The Payback” plays over the opening images of flames cremating the body of “Black Jack” Foley — nicely juxtaposed with the flames of Anthony Mangieri’s pizza oven — it’s firmly established that this episode will be about revenge, and there will be no room for subtlety.

After last week’s game changer, “A Proper Sendoff” returns to business as usual, while still leaving us with several big teases. Wendy, having hit her vulnerability limit, has accepted Taylor’s offer to talk — which could have huge consequences for her relationship with her boss. Speaking of Axe, he is so not done calling in those favors from Chuck. Next on his agenda is having the New York State Attorney General prosecute Taylor for financial crimes. Proof of illegal activity be damned. Oh, and Kate Sacker and the FBI are investigating the shady underpinnings of Charles Senior’s planned real estate monstrosity, a project intended to rebuild Chuck’s trust fund.

But first, Tense Pizza Dinner.

Literal and Figurative Sendoffs

by Damianista | Fan Fun with Damian Lewis | April 14, 2019

As winter has arrived in Westeros tonight, the level of intrigue, negotiation and backstabbing in the world of finance and law in New York is on par, if not higher, than what happens in Westeros. Axe and Chuck, the real-life dragons in disguise as human beings, forge on and give proper sendoffs, literally and figuratively, to those who want to get them out of their lives, making this episode my favorite this season.

While Jack Foley gets into the oven for cremation, a delicious-looking pizza gets out of the oven at Una Pizza Napoletana. Axe, Rebecca, Chuck and Wendy are having a private double date with chef Anthony Mangieri  personally serving the pizzaz.

If you’re gonna try, well, stick around
Gonna cry, just move along

Die With Your Boots On – Iron Maiden

Damianista and I were lucky enough to get an early screening of this week’s episode (thank you sis!!) at the Classic Car Club of Manhattan. Along with sitting on Axe’s private jet, eating “ortolan”, and playing a few hands of Blackjack, we were also fortunate enough to meet and chat with Dollar Bill and Bryan Connerty themselves, Kelly AuCoin and Toby Leonard Moore. Not only are they great actors, they are true gentlemen! It was an amazing night all around, and I’m so grateful to have shared it with Damianista!!

We Have Reached Peak Billions

by Miles Surrey | The Ringer | April 8, 2019

On Sunday night, in an iconic moment in television history, Chuck Rhoades delivered a rousing public address on BDSM

A plotty drama in which a bunch of dudes in Patagonia vests (RIP to that real-life tradition!) speak exclusively in pop culture references and confusing financial speak might not seem like a show with a penchant for sheer ludicrousness, but above all, Billions is committed to doing wild shit (an academic term). Four seasons of television—from Ice Juice to an unlikely alliance between former foes Chuck Rhoades and Bobby “Axe” Axelrod—have proved that pretty much anything is on the table for these perpetually scheming sleazeballs. And yet, nothing could have prepared us for Sunday night.

With “Overton Window,” the series is now operating at maximum batshit capacity (another academic term). Like Chuck in his kinky bedroom, you’ll need to strap yourselves in, because what transpired on Sunday was basically Billions’ BDSM Red Wedding.

World Gone Wrong

by Sarene Leeds  | Vulture | April 7, 2019

On the surface, the two Billions protagonists emerged from tonight’s excellent episode — written by co-showrunners Brian Koppelman and David Levien — triumphant. But the music that soundtracked “Overton Window,” specifically Bob Dylan’s “World Gone Wrong,” which opened and closed the episode, paints a less rosy picture than Chuck and Axe may evince.

At this stage of their never-ending game, the alliance between the onetime archenemies has proven to be a savvy business decision: Chuck Rhoades Jr. is the New York State attorney general-elect, and Bobby Axelrod has ostensibly destroyed Mason Capital by having Grigor Andolov — and his money — thrown out of the country.
