Loyalties Lie

Billions has quietly developed a devoted following over the course of its two seasons on Showtime. There’s something to be said for quality, and the increasingly vocal Billions fans has helped with the show’s success.
Bobby Axelrod, played by Damian Lewis, is the kind of guy who can’t lead a “normal” life. But that’s exactly what he’ll have to try to do in Billions Season 3. This season will detail Axe’s struggle to regain his livelihood and his financial empire. Easier said than done.
As reported by Deadline, Brian Koppelman divulged, “By the 3rd episode of this season it’s pretty clear that he’s not going to accept that that’s his modern life. He’s going to work really hard to change that. We just wanted to take a superhero in a way and put them in a box for which it’s hard for them to escape.”
“We had these characters that are super powerful within their worlds,” executive producer David Levien said at the TCA press tour. “It’s fascinating to us to put them in situations where they become vulnerable or less powerful. It’s a changing landscape. The question is how will Axe react?”
Not well, one would assume. Will Axe find a way back? Here’s what Damian says about that:
“People go down on this show but they get back up pretty quick,” Damian Lewis said. “That buoyancy is what makes it so exciting to watch… He has a lieutenant now and they are the avatar of everything that he likes and believes in. He will find a way to come back.”
According to Showtime, Axe and Chuck will also “battle for their own survival amid new forces and powerful enemies.”

It’s been a long winter, but now that Billions has announced a return date of March 25 for Season 3, bluier skies may be ahead. On Saturday, showrunners and stars graced the stage for this year’s Television Critics Association winter press tour, where they dropped the first promo and got the buzz up and running for the new season.
The party got started in some fun Facebook live sessions. These short interviews were great at revealing actors’ insights into the characters they play as well as some fun behind the scenes bits.
First was Asia Kate Dillon. As we’ve seen, Taylor has been playing an increasing bigger role since first appearing on canvas. Last season, Axe promoted Taylor to CIO. It looks like this season their role may be even more significant.

Number 10 – Riverdale
Number 9 – Preacher
Number 8 – Ozark
Number 7 – Game of Thrones
Number 6 – Stranger Things
Number 5 – Better Call Saul
Number 4 – Twin Peaks
Number 3 – Mr. Robot
Number 2 – The Leftovers
And number one goes to Billions!
Watching a sparring match between a U.S. District Attorney and a wealthy hedge fund manager probably doesn’t sound all that exciting until you witness how Billions has unfolded over the past two seasons. The first season was riveting but the second season was absolutely mind blowing.
U.S. attorney Chuck Rhoades will do anything and everything in his power to bring down hedge fund billionaire Bobby Axelrod but after taking it on the chin at the conclusion of the first season, he’s forced to regroup and refocus his efforts. Simultaneously, there’s an investigation launched to look into Rhoades to make sure he’s been following the letter of the law as well as enforcing it. As for Axelrod, he’s trying to solidify Axe Capitol after taking a few hits but thankfully he runs into an ambitious intern who ends up being his secret weapon. Obviously, Chuck and Axe eventually come face-to-face before the season is over and you won’t find a better clash on television without turning on the latest UFC fights.
Billions is arguably the most well written show on all of television right now with stand out performances from all of the lead actors and actresses including Paul Giamatti, Damian Lewis, Maggie Siff, Malin Akerman and Toby Leonard. By the end of the season, you’ll be in awe of how these characters are willing to sacrifice everything to get over on each other — it’s like all the twists and turns of The Sopranos but without all the bloodshed.
Where to Watch: Showtime
Highlight: Episode 10 ‘With or Without You’ — While the bulk of this series takes place in offices and boardrooms, this episode takes Axe out of his comfort zone as he’s desperate to save his marriage while Chuck finds himself staring at an even more powerful role as he looks to transition from the U.S. Attorney’s office to a new home in politics.
