Fellow Gingers

by Jake Kanter | Deadline | February 26, 2021

Prince Harry has become one of the first major royals to pass comment on The Crown after the show has grown into a cultural phenomenon for Netflix.

In an interview with James Corden on CBS’s The Late Late Show, the Duke of Sussex admitted that he has watched Left Bank Pictures’ lavish series, and said it provides a window on the pressures that come with being a British royal.

What the Emmy Nominations Got Right and Wrong – July 13, 2018

Consistently Great Show That Somehow Remains Off the Emmy Radar

by Mark Dawidziak | Cleveland.com | July 13, 2018

Said it before but this bears repeating, particularly on top of Thursday’s nominations for the 70th annual Emmys: There isn’t an awards system yet conceived on this planet that is not in some ways deeply flawed. I’ve done my time marching in this particular procession. That edict on awards also includes the Television Critics Association Awards, which I’ve been voting for each year since their inception in 1985. Do those awards have their admirable strengths and annoying weaknesses? Indeed, they do.

The same goes for the Emmys, which, year after year, get some things wonderfully right and some things terribly wrong. And nowhere do things go more right and wrong than with the nominations. No question, these nominations embrace some of the highest-quality programming TV had to offer during the 2017-18 season. But did Thursday’s announcement by the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences also yield the usual outrageous number of snubs, oversights and omissions? Oh, yeah.

Richard II or Bolingbroke: Potential Work Lined Up for Damian?

L: Richard II of England – R: Damian Lewis

Veteran director James Ivory claims financiers think he’s crazy for attempting the Shakespeare adaptation of Richard II. Despite 50 years of critical acclaim and Oscar recognition, plus British actors Tom Hiddleston and Damian Lewis lined up to star in his production, financiers are refusing to part with their money. “They look at you like you’re crazy,” he said. “There is an assumption that there is no money to be made from such an investment. A Shakespeare film does not grab the hearts of financiers, I can tell you,” he says. “At the moment I’m very optimistic it will happen.”

For the past several years and after stalled efforts, Ivory still hopes to direct a film version of Shakespeare’s Richard II, with a script penned by Chris Terrio (“Argo,” ”Justice League”) and envisions feature roles for Tom Hiddleston as Richard II and Damian Lewis as Bolingbroke.  Not all that unheard of since according to Damian’s filmography, he voiced Bolingbroke on a Richard II radio broadcast. In fact, James Ivory proposes Damian for the role of Bolingbroke in this March, 2018 video.

Both actors have extensive experience of Shakespeare. Hiddleston, who starred in the BBC’s award-winning The Night Manager is playing Hamlet this month in a Branagh stage production. Lewis appeared with the Royal Shakespeare Company before television dramas such as Homeland, Wolf Hall and Billions.
