Damian Lewis may be best known to many as an acclaimed actor, with memorable roles in Band of Brothers and Homeland, but his music has become much more than a side project. Following his debut album Mission Creep, he has now released Sweet Chaos, a second record that finds him moving into a bigger, more layered sound while keeping the raw, honest songwriting at its heart. In our interview, Damian talks about his lifelong love of music, from busking around Europe with a guitar and a motorbike to working with producer Guy Chambers on an album he describes as more boisterous, front-foot and pop-rock in spirit.
We also discuss the stories behind Sweet Chaos, including its themes of finding freedom and sweetness in life’s more chaotic moments, the influence of artists from Elvis and Bowie to rockabilly and baroque pop, and what performing his own songs gives him that acting does not. Damian also looks ahead to his UK tour, including his London date at The Garage on 14 October, and explains what audiences can expect from his live shows: strong songs, a great band, a few stories, some banter, and perhaps even a cover or two.
