Rake Magazine Interview: A True Leading Man – Feb 15, 2018

Easy Company

In an exclusive interview with The Rake, Damian Lewis tells Tom Chamberlin why we all, in spite of ourselves, love an anti-hero.

Lewis – from Life to Homeland, Wolf Hall to Billions – has become the finest purveyor of modern drama’s moral ambiguities. In fact, writes Tom Chamberlin, if you can think of an actor who has influenced our golden age of television more than him, speak up…

Among the more ambiguous archetypes of the celluloid age, that of ‘leading man’ is perhaps the least defined. Far from the specific criteria of commedia dell’arte and melodrama, in which the characters are demarcated (bad guy = black hat and moustachioed, etc.), the leading man is purely subjective. Arguably he is the origin of celebrity, pulling screen presence into the limelight of fame. But the list of leading men over the years has shown that no colour, size, hair, manner or cultural identity has ever had dominion over the sobriquet. That is until Damian Lewis entered the fray. For Lewis is a man who, above anything else, is an exemplar of leadership and integrity at a time when the acting world could use a dose of it.

Damian Lewis takes charge of rooms when he enters them. Photoshoots with celebrities are often led by either the photographer, who squeezes every image he or she can from the available time; the stylist, whose job is to make sure a well-curated variety of clothes appears in the magazine; or the publicist, who tends to be the powerbroker. The ‘talent’ can often struggle through the day (except, of course, former Rake cover subjects), regarding the experience as a necessary nuisance. Not so with Mr. Lewis.

Billions: Most Anticipated Show to Return to Showtime – Feb 14, 2018

New on Showtime: All the Movies and TV Coming in March

Source: Showtime – Photo: Jim Fiscus

We’ve reached that time of the month once more—that time when we look ahead to what we’ll be watching once another page comes off the calendar. The first of our streaming previews for the month of March comes from Showtime, which will be adding some noteworthy television shows and films before you know it. Read on to find out which.

Starting on the TV side of Showtime’s slate, the most anticipated March addition has to be the third season of the channel’s hit original drama Billions, from showrunners Brian Koppelman and David Levien. The series, which Showtime describes as a complex drama about power politics in the world of New York high finance, stars Oscar nominee (and Emmy and Golden Globe winner) Paul Giamatti as shrewd, savvy U.S. Attorney Chuck Rhoades and Emmy and Golden Globe winner Damian Lewis as brilliant, ambitious hedge fund king Bobby “Axe” Axelrod. Billions’ title alludes to the high financial stakes of the show, as Rhoades and Axelrod endeavor to destroy each other, and its latest season finds the two adversaries adjusting to a world that has shifted on its axis since the events of season two. The new season of Billions debuts on Sunday, March 25 at 10 p.m. EST.

Video: Damian Thinks It’s Weird That You’re Rooting for Axelrod – Feb 14, 2018

Billions‘ Damian Lewis Thinks It’s Weird That You’re Rooting for Bobby Axelrod

by Liam Mathews | TV Guide | February 14, 2018

There are a lot of great shows and movies about bad men from which people take the wrong lesson. Some guys wish they could be feared and respected like Tony Soprano (James Gandolfini) or Walter White (Bryan Cranston). They wish they could live in Mad Men times because “men were men” then. They watch The Wolf of Wall Street and see the criminal excess as aspirational, failing to recognize that it’s a cautionary tale.

Those are exactly the kind of people who watch Billions and shout “Yo Bob-ay!” at Damian Lewis out of passing cars when they see him on the street. Lewis’ character, hedge fund titan Bobby “Axe” Axelrod, is not someone you’re supposed to root for. He’s a greedy crook who made millions by shorting airline stocks while his employees were dying on 9/11. So it’s weird to Lewis when wealthy women come up to him and say “you are playing my husband, did you know that?”

Analyzing the New Billions Season 3 Poster Art and Logo – Jan 28, 2018

Are there spoilers, clues, and hints hidden in the new Billions season three promotional material?

by Gingersnap | Fan Fun with Damian Lewis | January 28, 2018

On Wednesday, January 24, Showtime released new promotional material for Billions season three. Are there spoilers, clues and hints hidden in the poster art and logo? I immediately began scrutinizing the photos for suggestion and significance. I mean, after all, it is instinctive to analyze everything since I have a degree in that field and do it for a living. It’s second nature. When dissecting the details of the promo material, you’ll never guess what I found. So come with me on a deep dive and see if we can come up with an indication of what’s to come.

Let’s start with the logo.

Source: Twitter @SHO_Billions

Ominous, is it not? Dark slate grey background of metal with exposed rivets. Reminds me of a war ship and we know the Billions‘ writers like to reference historical battles and cannon fodder. Is that grey metal iron? In some biblical meanings, natural iron is a symbol of natural, rational truth. Will the truth come out that Wendy violated her contract to warn Chuck about Ice Juice and will Dake discover that she shorted the Ice Juice stock? This scenario is definitely a favorite of mine and my fellow blogger/partner in crime, Damianista, and she talks about it here.  Oh, and I’ll come back to biblical references in a few paragraphs below, even though it seems like it’s out of left field at the moment. Stick with me kid, it will make sense in a bit.

What’s even more prominent about the Billions season three logo is the golden text. Gold as a precious metal signifies wealth, grandeur and prosperity and billionaires are not adverse to gold bar collections, including Axe. But take a second look at the golden text. Is it me, or is Billions fading, almost bleeding or melting? Are the billions disappearing into perhaps, millions? Is Axe’s financial empire on the brink of ruin? Is Axe Capital soon to be erased like the letters? Quick, someone grab a gold Sharpie® and start coloring the font back in. Please help my Bobby.

Now for the meaty part of my post, the group photo.

Finding Clues in the Billions Season 3 Trailer & Teaser – Jan 26, 2018

Billions Season Three: The Ultimate Pissing Contest Continues

by Damianista | Fan Fun with Damian Lewis | January 26, 2018

Source: Showtime

We kicked off the festivities for Billions Season 3 with a detailed coverage of Billions at TCA 2018 and now that we have an airdate, a trailera teaser and the new season poster, speculation rules until Season 3 premieres on March 25 10pm EST.

They edit the promos in a way so they do not give away much but a taste of what is coming. So “reading” them is not very different than reading the tea leaves, or in my home country, Turkey, the coffee cup.  Still, I cannot help dive deep into them, dissect them, try to put the pieces together and ultimately have fun!

A few seconds into the trailer we find Axe, in his own words, not hiding, not cowering, not defeated… However, indicted!

An indictment establishes, often via a grand jury, there is sufficient ground to charge a suspect with a crime. Then the suspect responds to the indictment with a guilty or a not guilty plea. I wonder if the short exchange between Axe and Orrin Bach implies Axe has already plead not guilty and they are discussing defense.

Axe (maybe talking about Chuck using Boyd to get to him): “What he did, it’s a fucking crime.”

Bach: “Maybe. But it’s not a defense.”

Source: Showtime

Axe’s disbelief in how he has ended up here is palpable. His frustration is all over his face. Does he still think he did nothing wrong? I doubt it. Whatever we may hear him say along the way, Axe knows he has taken the pissing contest way too far  and seriously fucked up along the way.

Once indicted, you are usually prohibited from leaving the state and you  need to ask for the court’s permission to travel. So now that Axe cannot go to Axe Capital in Westport, Connecticut as he pleases, Axe Capital comes to him.

Welcome to NEW Axe Capital Headquarters in New York! Continue reading Finding Clues in the Billions Season 3 Trailer & Teaser – Jan 26, 2018
