We Have Reached Peak Billions

by Miles Surrey | The Ringer | April 8, 2019

On Sunday night, in an iconic moment in television history, Chuck Rhoades delivered a rousing public address on BDSM

A plotty drama in which a bunch of dudes in Patagonia vests (RIP to that real-life tradition!) speak exclusively in pop culture references and confusing financial speak might not seem like a show with a penchant for sheer ludicrousness, but above all, Billions is committed to doing wild shit (an academic term). Four seasons of television—from Ice Juice to an unlikely alliance between former foes Chuck Rhoades and Bobby “Axe” Axelrod—have proved that pretty much anything is on the table for these perpetually scheming sleazeballs. And yet, nothing could have prepared us for Sunday night.

With “Overton Window,” the series is now operating at maximum batshit capacity (another academic term). Like Chuck in his kinky bedroom, you’ll need to strap yourselves in, because what transpired on Sunday was basically Billions’ BDSM Red Wedding.

Breaking Down Everything From the Fourth Episode of Season 4

by Alison Herman and Miles Surrey | The Ringer | April 7, 2019

The Ringer’s Alison Herman and Miles Surrey discuss the fourth episode of Billions Season 4: “Overton Window.” They break down Chuck’s big speech, the implications it has on his and Wendy’s relationship going forward, and Chuck and Axe’s relatively peaceful alliance (so far).

World Gone Wrong

by Sarene Leeds  | Vulture | April 7, 2019

On the surface, the two Billions protagonists emerged from tonight’s excellent episode — written by co-showrunners Brian Koppelman and David Levien — triumphant. But the music that soundtracked “Overton Window,” specifically Bob Dylan’s “World Gone Wrong,” which opened and closed the episode, paints a less rosy picture than Chuck and Axe may evince.

At this stage of their never-ending game, the alliance between the onetime archenemies has proven to be a savvy business decision: Chuck Rhoades Jr. is the New York State attorney general-elect, and Bobby Axelrod has ostensibly destroyed Mason Capital by having Grigor Andolov — and his money — thrown out of the country.

Chuck Risks Everything To Win

by Dana Feldman | Forbes | April 7, 2019

Everyone shows their true grit in the latest episode of Billions entitled “Overton Window.” It’s helpful to acknowledge what exactly the episode’s title means: This window is the range of ideas tolerated in public discourse, aka the ‘window of discourse’. In a nutshell, what behaviors will people accept in a political candidate?

The concept, which was first developed in the mid-1990s by Joseph Overton of the Mackinac Center for Public Policy, states that an idea’s political viability depends mainly on whether or not it falls within this window, rather than on a politician’s individual preferences. According to Overton, the window contains the range of policies that a politician can recommend without appearing too extreme to gain or keep public office in the current climate of public opinion.

It’s pure chaos as Axe Cap is under attack, and Chuck drops a bombshell on election night

by Kyle Fowle | Entertainment Weekly | April 7, 2019

Remember last week, when I said Billions had aired that early season episode that really kicked the action into high gear? Well, I was right, but there’s a good chance that “The Overton Window” is even better. It takes two moments of attack and turns them into pure Billions gold, as Axe and Chuck try to fight their way out of a tough spot. It’s an episode that solidifies their partnership in a way that’s seemingly irreversible, and it’s great to not really know what that means for the rest of the season.

The episode opens on the night before the primary election to determine the presumptive State Attorney General for New York. Chuck’s deal with Axe is paying off. Axe has hired men to sabotage school buses in the district, and to offer up a free casino trip with plenty of chips for a number of other constituents. That means record low voter turnout, which is a good thing for Chuck. Axe wants Chuck to do a happy dance. Chuck obliges with an absolutely hilarious “flatfoot and buck,” but he’s not actually excited. He has to drop out of the race.

Billions Season 4 Episode 4 Recap: New York Times – April 7, 2019

by Sean T. Collins | New York Times | April 7, 2019

When “Billions” is at its best, as it certainly was tonight, recapping is a dicey proposition. Focus on one element and you inevitably give short shrift to another equally entertaining aspect.

And more than any other show currently airing, “Billions” deploys a whole lot of very different ways to entertain you: a satire of extreme wealth and power as well as an alluring recreation of it; a financial and political thriller, tag-teamed with a comedy of manners; a parade of terrific character actors knocking around crisp, reference-heavy dialogue like a badminton shuttlecock; a sensitive and idiosyncratic depiction of a gender-nonbinary character, mixed with a humanizing and nonjudgmental depiction of sadomasochism within the context of a loving relationship.

World Gone Wrong

by Damianista | Fan Fun with Damian Lewis | April 7, 2019

First things first. Thank you Xfinity Watchaton Billions Watch Party for an amazing evening at Classic Car Club of Manhattan!

Lady Trader and I felt like billionaires as we sipped Champagne on Axe’s plane, ate quail-masquerading-as-ortolan with napkins on our heads, played Black Jack like there is no tomorrow, enjoyed a Q&A with show creators and cast members followed by an early screening of the crazy good Episode 4, and, hey, we got to hang out with these two! Kelly and Toby, you guys rock!

Credible threats? Check. Ultimate sabotage? Check. Unparalleled favors? Check. Shocking twists and turns? Check. Taking care of business at all costs? Check. We are in a “World Gone Wrong” exactly like in Dylan’s song opening and closing the episode and Billions is on fire this week!

Primary Day / 5 hours until the opening bell

It is 4:30 am in the morning and the two cutie pies we know as the Burke brothers are in “bright fucking yellow like you’re in Kill Bill” busy at a school bus parking lot making sure the buses will be out of commission this morning. Huh?

The Best of Frenemies

by Lady Trader | Fan Fun with Damian Lewis | April 5,2019

You’ll take my life but I’ll take yours too
You’ll fire your musket but I’ll run you through
So when you’re waiting for the next attack
You’d better stand there’s no turning back
The Trooper – Iron Maiden

Hello from the Trader’s Desk! This week, everyone is waiting for the next attack, be it from a friend, an enemy, or a chicken!

As seems to be the new normal, The War Council (Axe, Wags, Wendy) discussing taking down Taylor and TMC. Hall is not having the easiest time getting into TMC security. His counterpart there is someone whom Hall says “is a good man” and “thorough”. (Could Cook have been one of Hall’s minions at one time?) Hall is going to have to earn his paycheck on this assignment. He comes bearing a gift – a thumbdrive with TMC’s positions and trading patterns! It’s not the MOAB  Axe needs, but he can use the info to front-run TMC and take a little of their alpha. Wendy has a better idea: really go big on positions TMC wants to increase, taking a lot of little pieces of profit. Taylor will notice, and because they are such a perfectionist, will try to figure out the problem, taking them off their game. This is where Wendy has value: not knowing the market or stocks, but knowing the way Taylor thinks. Even Hall is impressed by Wendy! Kelly AuCoin Discusses What Went Down In ‘Chickentown’

by Dana Feldman | Forbes | March 31, 2019

There’s always a lot to unpack in every episode of Showtime’s hit series Billions and the latest, entitled “Chickentown,” is no exception. Let’s just say if you’re eating anything poultry-related, you may want to read this when you’re finished.

Axe And Wags Stop Dollar Bill From Going To the Dark Side:

When Dollar Bill’s (Kelly AuCoin) poultry-play quickly goes south, Axe (Damian Lewis) and Wags (David Costabile) step in to save the day and the food chain.

It all begins when Dollar Bill greets Axe at the office with his own rendition of Bruce Springsteen’s “Atlantic City” with its famous opening lines: “Well, they blew up the chicken man in Philly last night and they blew up his house too.” If you’re a fan of Billions, you know the music is another member of the ensemble cast and there’s always a direct link to the song choices and the story. In this case, the Springsteen classic about Philadelphia crime family mafia boss Philip Testa, who was taken out by a rival gang in the early 80s, makes reference to the “chicken man” and chickens get top billing in this week’s episode.
