Damian Lewis Interview: “Why I’m Playing a Gig at Brudenell Social Club in Leeds”

Learning His Craft in More Intimate Venues

by Adam Davidson | Yorkshire Post | September 24, 2023

Damian Lewis is best known for his critically-acclaimed roles in Homeland, Billions and Band of Brothers but the actor now takes on an entirely new role as he pursues a career in music. The 52-year-old Emmy and Golden Globe-winning star released his debut album ‘Mission Creep’ in June and is now about to embark on a UK tour, which includes a date at Leeds’ Brudenell Social Club on 1 October.

It is always a risky career move when someone at the top of their respective profession switches lanes to uncharted territory. This risk isn’t lost on Lewis as he is fully aware of the pitfalls and public perception when an actor ventures into music.

Damian Lewis on Jazz FM’s Nigel Williams Saturday Show

Surround Yourself With People More Talented Than Yourself

by Gingersnap | damian-lewis.com | September 23, 2023

Damian was on Jazz FM Saturday show with Nigel Williams today, September 23, 2023 discussing his music, debut album Mission Creep and UK tour – with Brighton, Manchester and Leeds coming up next! You can view tour dates and ticket outlets here. During the segment Nigel played four of Damian’s songs: After Midnight (at 115:30), Hole in My Roof (at 122:36), She Comes (at 165:38) and Harvest Moon (at 173:47).

Nigel asked Damian if he had picked up anything from being around other musicians like Giacomo Smith. Damian replied, “You must surround yourself with people more talented than yourself at all times in whatever you do in life, and I’m doing that. What’s interesting, you know, is there are guys in our band – Giacomo is one of them – who write and are releasing their own records. Everyone is writing their own stuff but I’m the only person that writes songs. I’m the only lyricist. I think we all…I think they bring an immeasurable amount to me and I think pleasingly – and maybe a bit surprisingly – I bring something to them, which is an opportunity to play songs, written lyrical songs. And it’s a privilege and a joy to be in there with them.”

How do you feel ahead of your first ever tour?
I can’t wait to get started, I’m really excited. I’ve played at a few festivals and done a lot of London gigs in the last year, but I’m so excited to play at these venues with a wonderful heritage and I’m really looking forward to getting out there to play my new album, Mission Creep.

Tonight’s venue, Thekla, is a cargo ship converted to a music venue, moored in the Mud Dock area of Bristol’s Floating Harbour, England. The showboat was based on the idea of creating, owning, and running a theatre on a sea-going ship and using it to showcase music of every sort (limited only by the size of the hold), including cabaret, comedy, plays, musicals, and poetry events. The ship also contained an art gallery.

Damian Lewis: Town Hall, Birmingham – Live Review

Swapping Billions for Ballads

by Sam Lambeth | Louder Than War | September 15, 2023

Damian Lewis bounds onstage with the aura of a rockstar – lithe, agile and sartorially accurate (all black, desert boots, nifty waistcoat). “When I was last in Birmingham, the Birmingham Post gave me a scathing review,” he laughs. “I’m hoping tonight’s reviews will be kinder.”

He does have cause for trepidation, don’t forget. Actors venturing into music have often found themselves hitting a dead end, with even the most casual music fan ready to pour scorn. Thankfully, Lewis’ debut album sees him enter the Hugh Laurie category, as opposed to the dark and musty files of Russell Crowe.

Damian Lewis on Jazz FM Breakfast Today

Jazz FM Breakfast with Nigel Williams

by Gingersnap | damian-lewis.com | September 13, 2023

Damian was on Jazz FM Breakfast with Nigel Williams today, September 13, 2023 discussing his UK tour. View tour dates and ticket outlets here. Damian shared that instead of a tour bus, they have a splitter van in which they play car Tetris fitting in all their equipment and band merch . He said their first gig of the tour in Nottingham at Rescue Rooms was an absolute joy. He went on to describe his album and music as a rootsy, storytelling, blues, and rock-n-roll feel to it, but the show is more rock-n-roll, much more rambunctious with a couple of reflective songs that are balladic moments. The audience seems to be having a good time and it’s been amazing fun. Up next, Birmingham! Then Jazz FM Breakfast played Damian’s cover of Harvest Moon.

You can catch the latest Jazz FM episode here, with Damian’s segment beginning at about 105:57:
