When “Billions” begins its third season tonight on Showtime, viewers will find Chuck Rhoades, Bobby Axelrod and the rest of the gang digging out from the upheaval inflicted by Rhoades’ machinations at the end of season two.

The characters return to an unsettled environment, but the show set in the world of Wall Street is running like a finely tuned sports car in the view of showrunners Brian Koppelman and David Levien, who created “Billions” with Andrew Ross Sorkin. “Billions” has hit the season-three sweet spot that comes after a series proves itself in season one, and then proves in its sophomore year that season one was no fluke.

Tight Writing, Intriguing Payoffs as Billions Begins New Season on Showtime – March 25, 2018

“Irresistible Characters, Addictive Story Lines and Great Writing”

by Stephen Spignesi | New Haven Register | March 25, 2018

SPOILERS – READ AT YOUR OWN RISK

Major changes are afoot when Showtime’s financial intrigue series “Billions” returns for its third season March 25 at 10 p.m. with the episode “The Tie Goes to the Runner.”

At the end of Season 2, hedge-fund billionaire Bobby “Axe” Axelrod (Damian Lewis) was seen Ubering his way home after posting bail following his arrest on a slew of charges by his nemesis U.S. Attorney Chuck Rhoades Jr. (New Haven’s own Paul Giamatti). Axe had deliberately sabotaged the Ice Juice company’s signature juice product and made people sick so Ice Juice’s initial public offering would tank and Rhoades would lose a fortune, which he did.

by Luca Celada | The Golden Globes | March 23, 2018

Billionaire investor Bobby Axelrod (Damian Lewis) and US Attorney Chuck Rhoades (Paul Giamatti) lock horns again in Billions. Season 3 of Showtime’s Wall Street drama sees Bobby indicted for malfeasance and Rhoades tasting victory. But as Lewis told the HFPA, appearances can deceive, and Paul Giamatti promises a dramatic final twist at the end of the season. Both actors told us how events have dramatically caught up with a show which was inspired by the macho antics of the financial world, but which has been given new meaning by a billionaire President who has seemingly managed to surpass the hubris of even the most brazen Wall Street honcho.\

Billions: Salvation and Damnation – March 23, 2018

From the Stock Market to the Court House

Billions probably deserves the prize for the Best Drama that people are not watching. And that’s a pity. The larger-than-life Wall Street tale is loosely based on the real-life pursuit of hedge fund manager Steven A. Cohen by the then US attorney for the Southern District of New York, Preet Bharara.

The cast is led by Oscar-nominated actor Paul Giamatti and Damian Lewis (Homeland). They are joined by a deep bench of talent including Maggie Siff (Mad Men), Malin Akerman (Watchmen) and David Costabile (Breaking Bad) among many others. Season three returns this week on Stan; creator Brian Koppelman recently told Forbes that the show has now been “distilled down to its essence”.

“The third season starts out with opponents Axe (Lewis) and Chuck (Giamatti) each under an enormous amount of pressure,” he said.

Axelroad and Rhoades Take a Break, Sort Of

by James Tarmy | Bloomberg | March 23, 2018

For filmmakers who want to dramatize the finance industry, one of Wall Street’s main appeals is that most people don’t understand how it works. In The Big Short, actress Margot Robbie explains subprime mortgages while sipping champagne in a bubble bath. Other movies—Margin Call and Wall Street come to mind—use fast-talking men in power suits screaming into cell phones to accomplish their exposition.

Typically, very little of the actual mechanics of working in finance ever come into play.  (To be fair, it would be hard to dramatize an earnings call, and to be clear, nobody should try.)
When Showtime’s Billions first aired two years ago, one of its initial draws was that it talked the talk. The story was woven around a surprisingly sophisticated debate about the parameters of insider trading, and the show gave a fairly accurate depiction of a hedge fund’s workplace culture, with analysts and traders and managers and compliance officers. There were even Bloomberg Terminals.
