ES Magazine article

Damian Lewis and Helen McCrory are both featured in this week’s ES Magazine and talk about family and their old party animal days.

Helen and I partied very, very hard before we met and then we collided at the Almeida in 2004 [in Five Gold Rings] and together we partied even harder. We used to lose entire evenings listening to jazz at Ronnie Scott’s. We love to dance, and when we weren’t out we’d put on music really loudly and dance around the house, just the two of us.

I proposed to Helen in Paris. I tried to do it on the Pont Neuf – I was sweating bullets and wrestling in my overcoat pocket for the ring, which had got stuck in a little Cellophane bag, but when I finally got it out, a gaggle of Japanese tourists surrounded us like a flock of seagulls, taking pictures, and the moment was totally destroyed. I now take Helen back to Paris for three days without our two kids [Manon, four, and Gulliver, three] every February for our anniversary. We walk about the city, and sit in bars drinking rosé.

Update: I’ve added screencaps from the e-dition to the gallery.

Small update from Michael, Damian’s assistant: Damian left the UK on Wednesday and is now in Charlotte. According to the Homeland Casting Facebook, filming starts on June 14th.

concerning Damian’s upcoming projects and it looks like at the moment Damian is attached to film Driven but that they are “still waiting for dates to be confirmed for the filming of HOMELAND. Until all of this is finalised nothing is

Given the possible filming dates for Homeland, Michael also says “It does not look like the Hay Festival will be in Damian’s diary either but to date this is TBC (To Be Confirmed).”

  • Damian Lewis’s personal assistant, Michael, sent us a small update. No broadcast date to report for Stolen but to look out for Damian in the Metro, The Times, the Daily Mail and other papers. Regarding Man is Wolf to Man, he thinks “this is all dependent on Homeland. There are a few other things Damian is working on and in discussions with, this will all be confirmed once Homeland is decided on.”

  • In an interview with TV Squad Homeland producer Howard Gordon says that the tentative broadcast date for Homeland is September.

On to ‘Homeland,’ with Claire Danes and Damian Lewis. Would you describe it as more of a psychological thriller than an action thriller?

Yeah, very much so … ’24’ always had a kind of heightened reality. I think it had a nice emotional integrity, but always in a heightened kind of context. This really does feel like it’s happening in the real world, because it has that kind of slow, observational, very human storyline. So it is more of a psychological thriller. I think in some ways, it’s taking some of the same material, obviously, and looking at it in an entirely different way.

You’re working with Showtime for ‘Homeland.’ How is that experience different from working with a network, the things that you can do, the pace that you can employ to tell the story?

Showtime feels to me like the difference between … a major studio movie and independent film. There’s a kind of fearlessness there, to be nuanced and to be slow … to take your time, I should say. Slow is not a good word. But, just the medium itself. The fact that there are no commercial breaks changes the rhythm and changes the whole experience. And of course, the latitude you have in terms of material.

What’s the timeframe for it? Is there a planned premiere date?

The idea would be in September. Nothing is written in stone. We have to finish this (pilot) first, and they have to like it, but I think it would come out next September.

  • Spoilers! EW’s Michael Ausiello quotes Life co-star Donal Logue on the future of the show:

Question: I hear Life won’t renewed for next season. Say it ain’t so, Mike! –Bev O.

Ausiello: It ain’t so! At least not yet anyway! Life co-star Donal Logue told us at the Monsters vs Aliens premiere that NBC probably won’t make a decision until May. And unlike you, the uncertainty isn’t keeping him up nights. “I am in a different position on this show than on shows I have done in the past where I was more the lead or title character,” he says. “On other shows I have done, I would be more in Damien’s position. He’s the one that is really feeling the concern. I feel free and open; it has been a great experience.” Logue adds that they’re shooting the season (or series?) finale as we speak. “It is really a super action-packed episode and it will answer a lot of questions. I think it is a very strong script and, so far, what we have shot looks great. Charlie confronts the deep dark parts in this episode. He is going to confront the conspiracy against him and it gets pretty intense.”
