Actor vs. Musician
by Staff | The Stage | June 14, 2023
“As an actor, you are asked to draw on your emotional self, and that can feel very exposing. But it’s not you, it’s the writer of that piece who is speaking directly from themselves. You are an interpreter. With this, there’s no characterisation – it is just you. I’ve found myself thinking: ‘Is it more enjoyable to inhabit a character in a parallel reality? Or is it more fun standing on stage as me?’ They are very different. And I don’t have the answer yet.” – Actor Damian Lewis on his debut album as a musician (Telegraph)

“Sod that, why can’t I have a go at something else?”
by James Hickie | Music Week | June 14, 2023
You may know him as the star of TV shows like Band of Brothers, Homeland and Billions, plus films like Once Upon A Time…In Hollywood, but Damian Lewis is adding another string to his bow in 2023. This week, he releases his debut album, Mission Creep, via Decca Records.
The journey to this point began a long time ago. A fan of everyone from John Martyn and The Rolling Stones to Velvet Underground and Eddie Cochran, Lewis tried to write songs in his early twenties before his nerves got the better of him. “I didn’t feel comfortable doing it,” he tells Music Week. “I didn’t know how to do it, I wasn’t confident.”

A Really Happy Accident

For his next trick, the Wolf Hall and Billions actor is turning rock star – and this time he’s not pretending. “Why doesn’t he stick to acting?!” says Damian Lewis, in a wry pantomime of outrage. The 52-year-old star of hit TV dramas from Band of Brothers to Billions, via Homeland and Wolf Hall, is anticipating the reaction to his boldest career move to date: on Friday, Lewis will release a debut album of his own songs.
“We’re notoriously bad at changing lanes in this country,” he says. “I’m fully aware of how dangerous it is for me, tiptoeing into another area of the arts. It’s a bit like standing up on top of the parapet going, ‘Right, take your shots, everyone; throw s— at me!’ ”

Nine Songs
by Ed Nash | The Line of Best Fit | June 9, 2023
Whilst his friends were exploring the worlds of Goth and Post-Punk, the young Lewis spent hours perfecting the Presley quiff and developing a lifelong love of ‘50s music. Fast forward to today and his acting career couldn’t be more different to his hero, rather than the missteps of The King of Rock and Roll’s film roles, Lewis’s body of work on screen and stage can only be described as illustrious.
Following his breakthrough as Major Richard Winters in Band of Brothers, he’s shapeshifted through a range of characters, from Homeland’s Nicholas Brody to a delightfully devious Henry VIII in Wolf Hall, bringing an old-school charisma each part, which came full circle with his take on Steve McQueen in Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time…in Hollywood.

Bringing Americana Vibes to Kent
by Staff | When the Horn Blows | June 9, 2023
With just under a week to go until Black Deer Festival brings the best in Americana vibes to Eridge Park in Kent, we are praying that the sunshine stays around for the party.
With the four edition of the event it is now Europe’s premier, award-winning Americana festival with the line up including artists like Bonnie Raitt, Nathaniel Rateliff & The Night Sweats, The Pretenders, Bear’s Den, Lucinda Williams, Steve Earle (Alone Again Solo & Acoustic), Far From Saints and many more at Eridge Park.
With some much to chose from – we give you our top three sets to check out across the weekend.
Today Damian released his fourth single and official music video, this time for the track ‘She Comes’ shot by Squire Studio on March 16, 2023 and directed by none other than Nick Murphy, the same director for Damian’s recent MGM+ and ITVX mini-series A Spy Among Friends. Location of the music video shoot was Master Shipwright’s Palace in Deptford, London, off the banks of the River Thames. The venue is described as “a peculiar new theatre in Deptford’s secret palace” that is “10 minutes from London Bridge.” View more behind the scenes photos from the video shoot in our Gallery here.
“She Comes is the first song I wrote for my debut album, so that makes it… my first song (That I’ve shared with the world, at any rate….). It’s about ghosts, and one ghost in particular. The album has hybrid sounds all through it, but this song leans heavily on a folk set up before crescendoing with a jazz feel brought by my brilliant band.”
As for the video: “We hoped to convey the feeling of an abandoned house, of the ghost of the woman that once lived there and a group of friends gathering to celebrate her.”

She Comes
by Jon Stickler | Stereo Board | June 9, 2023
Damian Lewis has released another track from his upcoming debut album. Following ‘Down On The Bowery’ and ‘Makin’ Plans’, the folky ‘She Comes’ finds the musician and Homeland star singing over a piano and lightly fingerpicked acoustic guitar melody. Lewis explained:
“She Comes is the first song I wrote for my debut album, so that makes it… my first song (That I’ve shared with the world, at any rate….). It’s about ghosts, and one ghost in particular. The album has hybrid sounds all through it, but this song leans heavily on a folk set up before crescendoing with a jazz feel brought by my brilliant band.”
