TV Review: ‘Billions’

If you are immune to the many charms of Paul Giamatti’s work, and the endless ways in which his “Billions” character displays intelligence and irritation through a series of perfectly deployed glares, this tale of high-powered hedge-fund players and the lawyers they battle may not be up your alley.

Giamatti plays Chuck Rhoades, a well-to-do U.S. Attorney for New York who feels compelled to rein in Wall Street excesses, with Damian Lewis as Bobby Axelrod, a hotshot mega-billionaire who can’t resist throwing his might and money around in ways that make for bad P.R., and bring scrutiny from law enforcement.

That description raises the question of whether you’ll be able to work up any sympathy for the one-percenters locked in combat in this slick series.

Many regular folks who’ve witnessed the frightening fallout of some of Wall Street’s high-stakes games may find that the subject matter itself is a dealbreaker. Just about every character in “Billions” has, at the very least, a trust fund and a few million in the bank — but many have substantially more.

Whatever their headaches, the day-to-day lives of these hedge-fund guys, especially Bobby, make Don Draper’s lifestyle look like a monk’s.

One in a Billion: Cigar Aficionado Interview – Jan 1, 2016

Killer Charm and Killer Instinct

by Marshall Fine | Cigar Aficionado | January/February 2016 Issue

Heads turn as Damian Lewis strides into a Le Pain Quotidien franchise in Manhattan’s Chelsea neighborhood.

Lewis, in sunglasses, walks the length of the restaurant unmolested to a table in the rear. It’s mid-afternoon and the lunchtime crowd has thinned on this summery late-October day. Still, it seems an unlikely place to meet one of the hottest actors in television. Asked how he happened to choose this particular spot to meet, Lewis, sunglasses now off, smiles quizzically and says, “I thought you chose it.”

Tall and surprisingly rangy, Lewis has a slow grin, and blue eyes that can look both warm and icily transparent in the right light. His coppery hair actually appears to have a slightly chestnut cast this particular day. Normally Lewis is the most recognizable red-haired actor working today.

Wall Street Gets Its First TV Show with ‘Billions’ – Dec 31, 2015

Wall Street Gets Its First TV Show with ‘Billions’

by Serena Elavia –  FOXBusiness – December 31, 2015

In an age where political shows like ‘House of Cards’ and ‘Madame Secretary’ dominate television, it seems that a Wall Street plot has been ignored by the small screen. On January 1, 2016, Showtime Networks (CBS) aired an early showing of ‘Billions’ starring ‘Homeland’s’ Damian Lewis playing hedge fund manager Bobby “Axe” Axelrod and Oscar nominated superstar Paul Giamatti playing the U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York Chuck Rhoades.

Viewers can guarantee that the show will have plenty of insight into the financial world as the series is produced and written by Andrew Ross Sorkin, the leading financial reporter for The New York Times (NYT) and Brian Koppelman and David Levien, co-writers of ‘Ocean’s Thirteen.’

Damian Lewis: On Why He Loves the Area and Kentishtowner – Sept 18, 2015

Damian Lewis: On Why He Loves the Area and Kentishtowner

by Larushka Ivan-Zadeh – Kentishtowner – September 18, 2015

Yesterday I interviewed Damian Lewis, star of Wolf Hall and Homeland, for Metro. What did I learn? That he has moved out of his house (formerly Hugh Laurie’s) in Tufnell Park. But only to get it decorated.

What else? That he has no plans to join the infamous ‘Primrose Hill set’.  “No, I think we’ve decided we like where we are,” he told me from New York, where he’s shooting Billions, a new TV series from the makers of Homeland (out in January).

But perhaps most importantly, I learnt that he’s a fan of this very publication. Remarking that I lived locally, he said simply, “Do you write for the Kentishtowner? You should.”

When I asked if he was a fan, he said a definitive “yes.”  So look, here I am.

Back to Damian: “I’ve lived in Kentish Town and Camden for most part of the last 10 years,” he continued, and he’s not lying: he’s oft spotted shopping in Parliament Hill Farmer’s Market, having a pint at The Junctionperusing the wetfish stand at Jonathan Norris, or tramping round the Heath with his wife, the actress Helen McCrory and kid.

“It’s a really lovely neighbourhood full of interesting and smart people who do a whole host of different jobs,” he said.
