Billions Season 3, Episode 4 Recap: I Learned It From Watching You, Dad! – April 15, 2018

Charles and Chuck Fathers-and-Sons Tour de Force

Hell of a Ride

Dust off your Harry Chapin albums, ditto Peter Gabriel’s “Solsbury Hill,” and get your dad feelings ready. This episode is the Charles and Chuck fathers-and-sons tour de force we’ve been waiting for. It’s done a LOT less hackily than these arcs often are (a well-timed flashforward helps set a good tone of ambiguity) and teaches us a whole lot about Chuck’s childhood, which … explains plenty. I was also glad to see Wendy get more work to do this week, she’d been a muted presence this season and Maggie Siff really got the opportunity to swing for the fences and put in a beautiful, moving performance.

Wendy usually spends way more time dealing with the strong negative emotions of others than she does with her own self-care, and here she must deal with the unexpected and tragic death of the man who Mad Men fans still think of as Bob Benson, but on Billions is Craig Heidecker, a cuter/nicer Elon Musk type and Wendy’s onetime lover during her separation from Chuck. His loss, in pursuit of space travel, guts Wendy, but also has a real impact on Taylor, who (sensibly) had placed a major bet against his chance of launching successfully. Obviously this cannot be the first time Taylor has realized that their work is not always aligned with the path of furthering human happiness and scientific advancement, but it definitely seems to be the first time they feel it with any acuity.

Billions Season 3, Episode 4 Recap: Venture Philanthropy & Space Colonization – April 15, 2018

“Wags knows that everybody in this world has a closet full of skeletons; all he has to do is channel his inner Randy Travis and get to digging up those bones.”

Hell of a Ride

Billions knows how to use time jumps and flashbacks better than most shows. The trick is that the show understands when to use them for maximum effect. “Golden Frog Time” might be the best example of the craft, but “Hell of a Ride” certainly ranks up there. The episode begins with Dake and Connerty offering Chuck Sr. full immunity in exchange for testimony against his son. They, or Connerty more specifically, want to know, on the record, that Chuck directed his father to use his trust money to invest in Ice Juice, therefore luring Axe into a trap before purposely sabotaging the IPO.

Then, the episode flashes back to three days earlier. It’s a wonderful setup, immediately establishing the stakes of the episode. What’s even more intriguing is that there’s truly no way to know what Chuck Sr. will do. We assume Chuck Jr. will find a way to sneak out of harm’s way, but considering how much the father hates the son in this moment, there’s no guarantee. Plus, Connerty is feeling more and more betrayed by his boss and mentor, and that means he’s seriously driven to combat his corruption.

Attack of the Quants

by Lady Trader | Fan Fun with Damian Lewis | April 13, 2018

Greeting’s from the Trading Desk! This week’s recap will be broken down into three parts: the first part will be a bit of a rant before the actual recap, the second, on Axe Capital and the attack of the “Quants”, and last, but not least on the dealings of Axe and in keeping with his God Complex, how he gave two people their “lives” back.

Rant: I need to address Ira and his girlfriend. I usually don’t veer off into the non-financial aspect of Billions, but it was the opening scene, and it pissed me off and had me yelling at my screen.

Ira, if that chick doesn’t want to marry you when you’re broke, why the hell would you want to marry her when you’re loaded? She basically told you she was a gold digger! And, she knows you are in financial trouble, but still orders those damn truffles? GTFO with her. Maybe your revenge was giving her that fugly ring? Ira, go out and get yourself a real woman, not a money grubbing Barbie. It’s women like that who give us GOOD women a bad name.  OK, end of  first rant. (If anyone who knows me and just read that in my 100% Brooklyn accent, thank you!!)

Billions on Showtime, 3.03: A Generation Too Late – April 11, 2018

When he’s hungry, he’s a jaguar. When he’s hunting, he’s a shark. When he’s ready to strike, he’s a viper.

Billions Season 3, with “A Generation Too Late,” just got real dark, folks. Not the sort of dark that takes you weeping to a fetal position when it’s done, your poor heart bleeding from the pain of it. No, this episode is the kind of dark that makes you mad, even when you thought the madness had already reached its upper limit. I don’t mean the characters have become unrecognizably hateful and ugly and you want nothing more to do with them ever. Quite the contrary. This episode instead shows you how real breathing people in technicolor reality sometimes need to go monochromatic, all black and white, when those are the only colors left available to see the world. You feel sorry for them for losing their color a bit and you know it’ll come back eventually (it always does, it has to!) For this hour, though, it’s gone, baby, gone.

Kit Magazine Interview – April 10, 2018

New York, Soccer, Trump

by Noah Davis | Kit Magazine | April 10, 2018

Illustration by Marco and Mauro La Villa

DAMIAN LEWIS WAS a few minutes late, fresh off an afternoon of getting fitted for a prosthetic so he could play Rob Ford, the late mayor of Toronto, in an upcoming film. The process involved getting his face and head completely covered in silicon strips, breathing through a small hole near the nose. It sounded awful, frankly, and, as he explained, a similar experience apparently once sent a big-screen martial-art tough guy into a blind panic.

Lewis, 47, was in New York to finish up the third season of Showtime hit, Billions. Shooting ran long due to the weather. What was supposed to be a six-month trip became seven going on eight, accruing “half a million” air miles flying back to London to see his wife and two kids during down time. The next morning, he had to be up at five o’clock to shoot a scene or two at Citi Field, and production would wrap for good in three days. He was ready to return home.

But first: dinner. We settle in at Kings Co Imperial, in Williamsburg, and get started with some fried mock eel, whatever that is. Lewis was ready to eat: “That’s the point of coming to Chinese restaurants, right? To get a bit of fried food.”

Damian to Play Rob Ford in the Movie ‘Run This Town’ – April 10, 2018

Damian Will Play a Flashy, Unpredictable Politician with No Filter

by Michael Oliveira | The Globe and Mail | April 10, 2018

As we initially reported back on March 26 and confirmed by both Deadline and The Hollywood Reporter, Damian will play controversial ex-Toronto Mayor Rob Ford in the drama, Run This Town. In an interview released today, Damian revealed he was fitted with a prosthetic in order to play the former mayor, who died in 2016 at the age of 46. Damian told Kit Magazine the process took an entire afternoon, which involved “getting his face and head completely covered in silicon strips, breathing through a small hole near the nose.”

However, writer-director Ricky Tollman clarified the film is not a biopic. Tollman says Ford is actually a fairly minor character in the story of a young wannabe journalist and other millennials who struggle to make a living in a post-recession economy. Ben Platt plays a bumbling newsroom intern who wants to break the story on the Ford scandal — but is several steps behind other reporters.

Tollman said he was thrilled to recruit Lewis to portray Ford, calling him “one of the most talented actors working today.”  “I thought that this is a guy that can play the moments of darkness and depth, but can also play the lighter moments. Rob was a guy that was elected because people wanted to grab a beer with the guy, you know?” said Tollman.

“He [Lewis] took to the idea that this wasn’t a one-dimensional version of this character.”

Behind the Scenes of Billions Season 3 Episode 3 – A Generation Too Late

by Damianista | Fan Fun with Damian Lewis | April 10, 2018

As I mentioned a billion times before, Billions is my dream show! And not only because my favorite actor is in it, but also New York, from its landmarks to city parks to its distinct neighborhoods, appears as a cast member! As someone who feels the only home she has in the world is the city that never sleeps, I love it that the show is taking over New York, the big film studio that it is, and shooting all over the place, from Manhattan to Queens to Brooklyn to The Bronx to Long Island and to northern suburbs. I cannot thank enough to the show creators and show runners Brian Koppelman and David Levien for giving us a love letter to the city in Billions.

That said, one little problem I had until last October was, while they shot Billions all over Manhattan, they did not shoot a scene showcasing not only my but also Mr. Koppelman’s neighborhood, the Upper West Side, or as Lewisto and I love to call it, the Upper Best Side. Billions Superlatives: Best, Worst, Most from S3E3 – April 9, 2018

Best Food Porn, Most Intimidating Interview Posture, Best Cardigan

by Miles Surrey | The Ringer | April 9, 2018

Source: Showtime

Every week, The Ringer will celebrate the passing of yet another Billions episode by honoring the installment’s best, worst, most, and least. These are your Billions Superlatives.

This week’s Billions, “A Generation Too Late,” is what I like to call a Side Quest Episode. Axe and Chuck aren’t making moves directly at one another—Axe is finalizing a way to trade under the table and work with Raul Gomez, the guy in charge of the police pension fund, and Chuck is still learning the lay of the land with the new, ultra-conservative attorney general. But that doesn’t take away from another entertaining and often bonkers week, featuring three separate references to the Oakland Athletics’ Billy Beane (really!), more sumptuous dining, and Connerty letting out his inner Bronx brawler. Let’s not waste another minute.

Best Food Porn

Like the season premiere, and, thankfully, most Billions weeks, this was a good episode for food. Axe’s personal cook, Chef Ryan, prepped burgers—twice! The first time, he paid homage to Ann’s Snack Bar, the home of famous, possibly Hall of Fame–worthy burgers in Atlanta. (Wags was a bit hard on Chef Ryan because the burgers weren’t quite as good as Miss Ann’s, but conceded it was a decent try.)

Damian Talks to Evening Standard How He and Helen Have Kept Working Through Parenthood – April 9, 2018

“I will never need to be a billionaire”

by Alistair Foster | Evening Standard | April 9, 2018

Damian Lewis has told how he and his wife Helen McCrory had to make the “difficult” decision to keep working while their children were young as they “need to make money”.

The 47-year-old actor insists his life is a far cry from that of billionaire Bobby Axelrod, who he plays in Sky Atlantic series Billions.

The star married McCrory, 49, in 2007 and the couple have a daughter, Manon, 11, and 10-year-old son Gulliver. Lewis said of his grueling filming schedules: “I must have made the decision that this is worth it, otherwise I wouldn’t be doing it.

“I know people who have put their careers to one side almost entirely for five, six, seven years while they bring their kids up, and some of them get lucky afterwards and they can come back to work, get in the saddle and keep working, and others haven’t been so lucky at all.
“Helen and I made the decision that, while we would be present and hands-on parents as best we could during this time, we’d still keep on working and not derail our careers entirely. It’s a difficult decision but then, we do need to make money.”

Lewis has spent a lot of time in New York filming the latest series of Billions, and told Hello! magazine: “I’ve pretty much flown back and forth from New York to London every ten days for the last six months.
