In Praise of Showtime’s Billions, Where New York’s Restaurants and Food Scene Shined – April 30, 2020

New York’s Vibrant Food Scene

by Elva Ramirez | Forbes | April 30, 2020

When Showtime’s lauded “Billions” returns on May 3, it brings back, in stark relief, a semblance of a New York that no longer exists, and may never come back.

The show, which stars Damian Lewis, Paul Giamatti, and Maggie Siff, among others, is a ripped from the headlines portrait of New York’s new Golden Age, one steered by Bill Ackman-inspired hedge fund titans, their algo- and quant- trading acolytes and the tenacious law enforcement agencies that are occasionally their foes. Anyone watching a show about the lifestyles of the rich can expect views of luxury high rises, glass-enclosed modern offices and the just-so fashion of the quietly powerful (notice how often the people in Bobby Axelrod’s circle wear shades of dark blue, his favorite color; the show’s costume design comes via the talented Eric Daman, who made “Gossip Girl” into a fashion bible).

But there’s one element of the show that always changes, yet remains the same. In nearly episode, New York’s vibrant food scene is lovingly showcased.

Damian’s Q&A Interview on Billions Season 5 – April 30, 2020

The Wall Street Avengers

by Maria Estevez | amNY News | April 30, 2020

May 3 will see the release of the fifth season of ‘Billions’, a drama series that follows a legal battle of the U.S. Attorney against a self-made millionaire in New York, played by the English actor. Metro chatted with the 49-year-old to learn more.

Money, power, inequality… humanity has been consumed by the class struggle throughout history, and if ‘Game of Thrones’ showed that fight in an imaginary scene, ‘Billions’ does it as a fable about wealth and power in modern life.

English actor Damian Lewis brings to life Bobby Axelrod, a business titan who can jump out of a plane with his friends before a Metallica concert, pick his children up from school or have an enemy killed without any problem. On the other side of the law, we see a prosecutor Chuck Rhoades Jr., played by Paul Giamatti, heir to the old money that is settling at the prestigious Yale Club, where he will meet Catherine Brant, a successful writer (Julianna Margulies).

When Showtime renewed ‘Billions’ for its fifth season, it came as no surprise. According to the audience reports, the series averages 4.5 million viewers per episode in just the U.S. New episodes will see the alliance between Chuck Rhoades (Paul Giamatti) and Bobby Axelrod (Damian Lewis) being terminated. Both will return to their corners of the ring to continue the fight they started in the beginning.

Showtime and Concepts Launch Streetwear and Sneakers Capsule – April 28, 2020

Billions Apparel Collaboration

by Obi Anyanwu | WWD | April 28, 2020

The Boston-based boutique and Showtime Networks are launching on May 1 a capsule collection for the drama series “Billions,” to coincide with the May 3 premiere of the show’s fifth season.

The apparel capsule, which is the first collaboration between the two, is comprised of black and gray T-shirts and hoodies featuring scenes from past episodes, and phrases “anyone can be bought” and “what drives you doesn’t understand enough” on the back. The collection will be available exclusively on the Concepts web site for $35 to $100 and will continue through the summer with a footwear release.

The boutique’s management has been a fan of the show since its beginning, which fueled the capsule, but the team drew inspiration from the show, nostalgia, luxury and New York City for the collection’s design. “Honestly, we would have been involved since the beginning if we could, but the timing couldn’t be better than now,” said Deon Point, creative director of Concepts.

Billions Season 5 Split In Two – April 1, 2020

CoVid-19 Temporarily Suspends Filming

by Nellie Andreeva | Deadline | April 1, 2020

This is not an April Fool’s joke. Deadline reports Billions season five will split into two.

Showtime has made more adjustments to its schedule as a result of the coronavirus pandemic, which suspended all Hollywood production.

Black Monday and Billions, which were in production on their current/upcoming seasons when the shutdown occurred, will air partial seasons, with the rest of the episodes running at a later date after all production has been completed.

For both the unexpected spring finales will come at a natural point in the story arcs of their seasons. Showtime already two weeks ago moved in to stagger the remaining finished original episodes of Black Monday by shifting the comedy’s air pattern from two back-to-back new episodes premiering a week to one, beginning March 22, continuing through Sunday, April 12. The April 12 Episode 6 of Black Monday will be the last of the current batch.

Social impact pioneer Mike Prince (Corey Stoll) poses a true threat to Axe’s dominance, and Chuck feuds with a formidable district attorney (Roma Maffia). Taylor Mason (Asia Kate Dillon) is forced back to Axe Capital, where Taylor must fight to protect their employees and their assets. Wendy Rhoades (Maggie Siff) reevaluates her loyalties and forges surprising new alliances that put her at odds with both Chuck and Axe. This season, the struggle for power becomes a struggle for survival, and all characters must adapt or risk extinction. Season 5 premieres on Sunday, May 3 at 9/8c.

Billions Has Become a Critics’ Darling – March 4, 2020

When Will Emmy Voters Notice?

by Greg Braxton | LA Times | March 3, 2020

“Billions,” Showtime’s acclaimed drama about the cutthroat world of New York finance and politics, is about to launch its fifth season in May, just in time to catch the wave of an election season in which two billionaires are running for president.

But although real-life billionaire Mark Cuban has made a few appearances on the show playing himself, don’t expect President Donald Trump or Democratic candidate Mike Bloomberg to make any cameos during the upcoming season. The same goes for billionaire Tom Steyer, who dropped out of the race after his largely self-financed campaign failed to catch fire in the South Carolina primary.

Not that “Billions” needs them. The series already has more than enough political intrigue and razor-sharp personal dynamics in the blood feud pitting federal government watchdog Charles “Chuck” Rhoades (Paul Giamatti) against wealthy hedge-fund king Bobby “Axe” Axelrod (Damian Lewis).

And producers suggest the stakes will be even higher this season with the addition to the cast of Julianna Margulies (“The Good Wife”) and Corey Stoll (“House of Cards”).

“There is no doubt this season features titanic figures at each other’s throat[s],” said “Billions” executive producer Brian Koppelman, who runs the series with fellow executive producer David Levien. “People are coming up against figures of equal size, which makes these conflicts life-and-death — existential.”
