Help! I’m Meeting Hanks
by Weekend Reporters | Daily Mail | October 19, 2018
Some of today’s biggest stars have written for us in the past – including Damian Lewis, who wrote this hilarious diary about his big break in Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg’s WWII TV series Band of Brothers. Weekend Magazine shared extracts from Damian Lewis’s diary as a rising star:
Late August 1999 – Call from my agent, Stephanie Randall. Hollywood’s coming to town. Hurrah. Another chance to record myself on a tape for some big blockbuster which will gather dust on a shelf in LA. ‘This is different,’ Stephanie stresses, ‘It’s Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg. They’re seeing everybody, and they want you to play an American. It’s gonna be huge.’
Day of audition – I head off on my motorbike. It rains on me, I arrive, soaked and walk down some steps into a colourless Soho basement.
The results were all over the place. Some went with current characters, others delved deep into their back catalogue. Few, far as we could tell, mentioned any of the footballers on their early show 1st & 10, nor Arli$$. Most people, though, have ignored the whole “500 words or less” part and merely communicated in the way most people do these days: via gifs. Several characters made the final results, including Dick Winters! Thank you for voting. See all the results from Uproxx.

Damian Discusses His Most Pivotal Roles

“I am interested in the imperfections in people,” Damian Lewis says. “I’m interested in the contradictions and in the moral struggle that often exists in all of us.”
This sensibility threads through many of the actor’s film and television characters, particularly his current role as shrewd hedge fund manager Bobby Axelrod on “Billions.” The Showtime series returns for its third season tonight, bringing us even closer to understanding what exactly makes Bobby tick.
“He’s a fiercely loyal man,” Lewis says about Bobby. “He’s ruthless. He’s extremely competitive. For him, the game is everything. The playing of the game is the thing — and it is a game, so winning the game is paramount. He enjoys it.”
The role is a big shift for Lewis, 47, who got his start on British television before coming to the attention of American audiences in Steven Spielberg’s World War II epic miniseries “Band of Brothers.” Although Lewis has since had several career-defining roles, particularly as Nicholas Brody in “Homeland,” that project lingers as one of his most important projects.
“Some jobs are just gigs, but some jobs have the ability to be life-changing,” he notes. “They just alter you in some small way. ‘Band of Brothers’ was definitely one of those.”
Here Lewis discusses several of his most pivotal roles:
Bobby Axelrod, “Billions” (2016-2018)
“What attracted me to Bobby Axelrod was to get to play a man who is willing to do whatever it takes to get what he wants and see where that takes him personally. To find out, during the course of the show, how corrupting that is on a man who is prepared to cross one line after another. What does it do to one’s soul? I saw that as potentially where it was going. And it’s enormous fun. He’s a form of gangster and it’s fun playing that kind of guy.”
Damian Lewis and Claire Danes in a scene from “Homeland.”On the new hit Showtime drama “Homeland,” actor Damian Lewis plays U.S. Marine Sergeant Nicholas Brody, a former POW suffering from a serious case of post-traumatic stress disorder following eight years of captivity in Afghanistan. Brody, who may or may not be working for al Qaeda, is being covertly followed by a paranoid CIA agent played by Claire Danes, as the series explores complicated issues such as the price of freedom, the psychological scars of war, and the post-9/11 limits on privacy.

From a Repressed Tortured Soul to a Possessed College Professor
by Staff | PBS Masterpiece | May, 2003
Whether they realized it or not, viewers of the popular Steven Spielberg/Tom Hanks miniseries Band of Brothers were watching an English actor in the starring role of Major Richard Winters, the taciturn American hero of an airborne unit during World War II. The real Major Winters is salt of the earth from Pennsylvania. The actor Damian Lewis is from London’s Abbey Road and attended Eton. Otherwise, you’d never know the difference.
While on hiatus between the production of series one and two of The Forsyte Saga, Lewis played Jonesy, a possessed college professor in the forthcoming film of Stephen King’s Dreamcatcher.
Lewis recently talked by phone from London about the Forsyte remake, Soames’s inner life, and what it’s like to play an alien.
