Frank Grillo Shares What it Was Like to Work with Damian Lewis on Billions – July 24, 2020

Pizza and Paintings

by Charles Thorp | InsideHook | July 24, 2020

Frank Grillo recently joined InsideHook readers for an intimate live conversation hosted by contributor Charles Thorp. The hard-working actor went in-depth on his experience joining the cast of the Showtime hit Billions as artist Nico Tanner, his work in Marvel’s Avengers franchise as Crossbones, and Netflix’s recent acquisition of his MMA-based series Kingdom.

You can read their conversation, which has been edited and condensed for clarity, below.

InsideHook: How familiar were you with Billions before you joined?

Frank Grillo: I had no idea this show was this big. I did it because I had some down time, and I swear to God I have never been more bombarded by people on a project that I have done. I have to say I agree that it is one of the better shows on television, and no question one of the greatest casts on television. So to step in during their fifth season was a huge pleasure.

Accents and How He Handled Overnight Fame

by Joel Keller | Industry Mag Staten Island | July 19, 2020

He may be an officer of the British Empire, but the London native is best known for playing Americans, including Bobby Axelrod in Billions.

Damian Lewis has been playing American characters on and off (mostly on) for 20 years, since he was cast as Maj. Dick Winters in the 2001 HBO miniseries Band of Brothers. He’s played so many American characters that people are genuinely shocked to hear his natural west London-accented voice. He’s so used to it that sometimes he forgets to go back to his natural voice.

“I go get my groceries in an American accent,” he told ABC News in 2016. “And I get halfway through paying and I’m like, ‘I’m so sorry. I’m British, and I have no idea why I’m talking in an American accent to you, but I’ve been doing it all week.”

His American roles have been so prominent in his career that BBC America’s website actually has a listicle with the title “7 Roles Featuring Damian Lewis’ Real Accent.”

Suffice to say, playing American characters has been very good to Lewis. He won an Emmy in 2012 for his powerful turn playing war hero-turned-terrorist Nicholas Brody in the first season of Homeland, and since 2016, he’s played scheming billionaire Bobby Axelrod in another Showtime series, Billions. “Hello, I’m Damian Lewis, one of those pesky Brits,” he said somewhat apologetically when he went up to accept his Emmy.

Funding Freedom from EB – July 8, 2020

Cure EB

Damian plus Sohana and her family explain what funding research means to families living with Epidermolysis Bullosa. With treatment trials started there is a real chance to improve the lives of children who are really suffering.

Please visit Cure EB.org here or their Just Giving page here.

Cure EB (formerly Sohana Research Fund) exists to treat and cure epidermolysis bullosa an inherited genetic skin condition that leads to blistering and skin loss with the mildest trauma. It is “Hard to say. Hell to live with” and children and adults with the condition live in constant pain associated with the burn like wounds that occur. The intense pain and repeated damage leads to progressive disability and severe forms are life shortening due to a particularly aggressive skin cancer that develops in early adult hood. EB children and adults have tremendous courage and resilience which helps them cope with the unremitting pain – but what they want most is to have what most of us take for granted – a pain free life.
