Stars on the Tube: Who’s Famous at YOUR Station?

by Bridget Galton | Hamstead & Highgate | May 19, 2022

Cartoonist Simon Ellinas has created a book of 272 caricatures of celebrities associated with each Tube stop, detailing their connections to each area. Simon Ellinas first started doing caricatures of his teachers as a Hampstead Schoolboy.

And after training at Harrow Art School of Art, the former St. Anthony’s and UCS pupil enjoyed a career as a cartoonist and illustrator for magazines and newspapers – including drawing caricatures for the nationals.

Now he has published his “lockdown project” which puts a famous face to every underground stop. The Barnet resident researched each destination, but says while areas like Hampstead (Ricky Gervais) and Highgate (Karl Marx) had “lots of possibilities” other celebrity connections were “more tenuous”.

“Once you get out onto the fringes you’re scrabbling around to find someone. For the new station at Nine Elms I chose Joanna Lumley because she was said to shop there. But most of them have strong connections, they were born, live, work or in the case of Dylan Thomas in Camden, they drank there – he drank in a lot of places, but I chose Camden Town.”

BBC correspondent Katya Adler was assigned Swiss Cottage because she attended South Hampstead High School. Martin Freeman is Belsize Park because “I heard he lived there.” Actor Damian Lewis lives in Tufnell Park, and Ray Davies is Archway, because Muswell Hill doesn’t have a tube stop and The Kinks played the Archway Tavern. Meanwhile Rolling Stone Keith Richards graces St. John’s Wood because “he wrote I Can’t Get No Satisfaction there in the 60s”, and Helena Bonham Carter grew up around Golders Green.

The Red Revolution: What it Really Means to Have Crimson Locks – Feb 12, 2018

New Book Celebrates All Things Ginger

Despite just 2% of the world’s population having crimson locks, they are over-represented in high-profile public roles.

But it might be too soon for them to have the last laugh, as it’s feared the redhead gene could die out by 2060.

A new book, Ginger Pride – A Red-Headed History Of The World, examines what makes red hair so special – and confirms they really are a unique breed.

“It started off as a look at historical figures with red hair, as I noticed there was a bit of a trend,” explained author and “proud ginger” Tobias Anthony.

“But I decided to widen it to look at other topics.

“One aspect I was really intrigued by was the myth-making, like accusations of being vampires and witches centuries ago.

“Redheads play a hand in almost every aspect of the world as we know it, from Vikings to royalty (by the time Queen Elizabeth I passed, Britain had seen 138 consecutive years of redheads on the throne) to medicine.

Damian Lewis said, “The redhead stock is very high at the moment. This might be a unique moment in recent history, redheads everywhere are doing well – Prince Harry, Ed Sheeran, Julianne Moore, me, Lily Cole.”

“I think once you have this type of myth and aura connected to ginger hair, there’s some attraction to it. There is something that makes you stand out and seems to captivate people in a certain way and it makes sense to want to ride on the coat-tails of that.”

Damian Lewis Writes Foreword for ‘The Outstanding Actor’ Book – Feb 16, 2015

The Outstanding Actor: Seven Keys to Success by Ken Rea, Senior Acting Teacher at Guildhall School of Music and Drama

by Gingersnap | damian-lewis.com | February 16, 2015

Who better to write the foreword for his Alma Mater than our favorite actor Damian Lewis!

This is a wonderful book with a unique take on how actors can get better and improve their chances of success. If we can all perform with half the warmth and generosity with which Ken has been teaching for the last 30 years, then we will have fulfilled our responsibility as story tellers and audiences all over the world are in for a real treat.

Damian Lewis – actor

Drawing on Ken Rea’s 30 years’ teaching experience and research, as well as interviews with top actors and directors, The Outstanding Actor identifies seven key qualities that the most successful actors manifest, along with practical exercises that help nurture those qualities.

Damian and Helen Attend Cheltenham Literature Festival

by Damianista | Fan Fun with Damian Lewis | October 12, 2014

Damian loves and supports poetry and so do we! One poetry project he has actively supported is The Love Book, a brilliant collection of classic and contemporary love poems that vary from Shakespeare to E.E. Cummings to Maya Angelou coming together in a book as well as in an app. And it is our utmost pleasure to take you along to The Love Book event we were extremely lucky to attend at Cheltenham Literature Festival.

The reading took place in Times Forum, a huge 1400-seater. There was a giant screen so everyone could comfortably see the entire performance. The couple would stand on opposite sides of the stage and read.
