‘Driven’ Update

EXCLUSIVE: Damian Lewis, Jessica Brown-Findlay, Peter Capaldi and Iwan Rheon will star in actor/writer/director David Leon’s debut feature Driven.

Production on the crime thriller is set to start in and around Newcastle and Northumberland in early 2013. Driven will be produced by Daisy Allsop with the photographer Rankin attached as executive producer alongside Gareth Wiley. German production company GFF will co-produce. The film will be made through Leon’s production company Zeitgeist Films.

Leon, currently starring in ITV’s detective drama Vera, was the winner of Best Narrative Feature at last year’s Tribeca Film Festival with his short film Man And Boy, starring Eddie Marsan, which he also co-wrote based on a true story. His first short Father, starring Sam Spruell, also met with positive response and international exposure. Leon’s second feature Orthodox is currently in development with Northern Film & Media’s Film 4Ward scheme, in association with Film4.

Driven is a loosely autobiographical film, a crime thriller based around Leon’s own childhood experiences growing up in Newcastle in the late ’80s and early ’90s.

‘Will’ Poster and Trailer!

  • We have our first look at Damian Lewis in the film Will. Click here at Archstone Distribution or below to view the new trailer. Click here at the gallery for screencaps. (Update: Click here for a download.) According to the distributor, “there is no release date planned for Will yet in the US or the UK” (the November date listed on their website is incorrect) but that a film release could happen “sometime towards the end of this year to early next year.” According to Cinando.com, the film will make its debut at the Cannes Film Market this May.

  • The Evening Standard offers a few more details on the film Driven in an article about filmmakers David Leon and Rashid Razaq:

Leon, who lives in east London, said they were all “tremendously proud” to have triumphed at the festival co-founded by De Niro, one of his cinema heroes – although work commitments meant none of the team was able to accept the prize from the Hollywood star in person.

The honour comes as Leon and Razaq, 31, are fundraising for their first full-length feature script, Driven, a crime thriller-meets-love story with a budget closer to £1million. Shooting is scheduled to start next year, with Band Of Brothers star Damian Lewis.

The film, which Leon will direct alone, is set in 1989 against the backdrop of the fall of the Berlin Wall. It tells the story of a young man facing the moral dilemma of whether to follow his family into crime.

News & new gallery address

  • We received an update from Michael

concerning Damian’s upcoming projects and it looks like at the moment Damian is attached to film Driven but that they are “still waiting for dates to be confirmed for the filming of HOMELAND. Until all of this is finalised nothing is

confirmed for any other work.” Homeland producers said earlier this year that Homeland would film from June to October. Given the possible filming dates for Homeland, Michael also says “It does not look like the Hay Festival will be in Damian’s diary either but to date this is TBC (To Be Confirmed).”

New Project?

According to an interview with British actor David Leon in The Guardian, Damian will play the lead in the Leon’s first feature film, Driven:

Since then, he has made two short films; one of them, Man and Boy, about the death of a suspected paedophile, was a selection of the Tribeca film festival in New York last week. This year he hopes to direct his first feature film, Driven, a crime thriller set in Newcastle in the late 80s; Damian Lewis, star of the Forsyte Saga, is confirmed as the lead. Despite this, Leon insists he doesn’t harbour Hollywood ambitions. “All I’ve ever wanted to do is challenging projects,” he says. “If that takes me to America, fantastic, but I don’t think I’d ever really want to leave England on a permanent basis. This is where my roots are. What I’m really drawn to is, not arthouse necessarily, but the more independent, European-feeling films.” See? He would have made a terrible professional footballer.
