  • Spoiler warnings! NBC Universal has posted these synopses for episodes 2.03 and 2.04 of Life

“The Business of Miracles” (2.03: October 6, 2008 on NBC in the US):
FROZEN STIFF—The body of a cancer research scientist is discovered literally frozen solid, baffling Crews (Damian Lewis) and Reese (Sarah Shahi). The crime scene suggests that an animal rights group took revenge on the doctor by switching out his oxygen tank with pure liquid nitrogen. As the detectives delve into the victim’s tangled private life, they become increasingly skeptical about the identity of the murderer. Meanwhile, Crews is determined to prove Jack Reese (Victor Rivers) was involved in his incarceration, and Ted (Adam Arkin) asks Crews to act as a reference for a business school interview. Donal Logue also stars.

“Not For Nothing” (2.04: October 10, 2008 on NBC in the US):
US AGAINST THEM—A university’s prison experiment goes horribly wrong when one of the students acting as a corrections officer ends up dead. Crews (Damian Lewis) and Reese (Sarah Shahi) are in a race against the clock to find the killer. As they interview both prisoners and guards, the detectives discover the social experiment may have done more damage than good. Meanwhile, determined to figure out Jack Reese’s (Victor Rivers) connection to his case, Crews obsesses over a recording he obtained from a wiretap he placed on Reese. Donal Logue, Adam Arkin and Brent Sexton also star.

  • On Sunday, September 28th the History Channel in the US will show 8 of the 10 episodes of Band of Brothers starring Damian Lewis. (They are broadcasting episodes 3 through 10 – go figure!)

  • Christopher Lawrence’s comments about Life for the Las Vegas Review Journal include:

Crews spent last season living in a mansion with no furniture and rarely is seen without a piece of fruit, the more exotic the better. (Crews’ idiosyncrasies extend to the British actor who plays him and speaks in an American accent offscreen as well. “I’ve played so many
Americans now over the last six or seven years,” Lewis says, “that I developed, I guess, an American persona that I just feel is part of me.”)

  • The Cape Cod Times posted this review of Life starring “the wonderful Damian Lewis.” 😀

  • Spoilers! NBC/Universal has released this synopisis of “Everything…All The Time” episode 2.02 of Life which will air in the US on October 3, 2008:

UNDERGROUND PARTY CIRCUIT CLAIMS LIFE OF FAMILY MAN—Charlie Crews (Damian Lewis) and Dani Reese (Sarah Shahi) investigate the death of a family man who is found beaten and bound to a chair at the bottom of an empty pool. Captain Tidwell (Donal Logue) is convinced the murder was an act of gang violence and sends the detectives on assignment. After interviewing the victim’s daughters and two gang members, Crews and Reese’s only clues are an underground party circuit, a bottle of steroids, and a myth about a man only known as Monster. Meanwhile, Ted (Adam Arkin) gets an unexpected visit from Dani’s father who is determined to find out what information Crews has on him and consequently has a request of Ted. Crews also enlists the help of his ex-wife Jennifer (Jennifer Siebel) to reach out to Rachel (Jessy Schram), the lone survivor of the murdered family Crews was wrongly convicted of killing. Brent Sexton also stars.

  • A Los Angeles Times article by Maria Elena Fernandez discusses the pressure to succeed on the returning sophomore television shows including Life starring Damian Lewis. The article also reveals that only 13 episodes of most of the returning shows have been ordered so far. Here are the excerpts about Life:

FOR THE record: “Pushing Daisies,” “Private Practice,” “Dirty Sexy Money,” “Chuck” and “Life” have not been canceled. But it has been a long time — about as long as it takes for a baby to grow in the womb — since Ned the Piemaker, Dr. Addison Montgomery, the Darling family, Chuck Bartowski and Charlie Crews graced your television. Soon, though, these ABC and NBC shows will return for their sophomore seasons…

“We’ve been gone so long that I think people assume that ‘Life’ was canceled,” said executive producer Far Shariat. “So we have a mandate from the network to try to get more people when we come back. We were just starting to get up on our feet after 11 episodes. It’s almost like we’re starting over.”

…And NBC gave “Chuck” and “Life,” which premiere Sept. 29, a boost during its Olympics broadcasts. (“Life” will air for two weeks on Mondays and Fridays and then only on Fridays, beginning Oct. 17.)

Although only 11 episodes of “Life” aired, producers say they feel lucky that they were able to complete Charlie Crews’ (Damian Lewis) journey of finding the man who should have served 12 years in prison instead of him. In the new season, Charlie will continue to fight crime and eat fruit.

“As the revelations of the conspiracy unveiled, the tone was darker than the initial tone of the show,” creator Rand Ravich said. “We’re resetting the tone to where there’s this darkness to Charlie’s back story and there’s darkness in his future, but his day-to-day should be full of life and joy. Prison was such a transcendent experience for Charlie that every day is the first day he stepped back in the sunlight. Then as he steps deeper into the conspiracy, we will find ourselves in a darker place again.”

  • Lisa de Moraes of The Washington Post said this about Life: Season 2:

NBC brought it back for a second try, despite its less than great ratings. That’s a good sign the network has confidence in the show. It’s one of a handful of freshman series from last year that are getting “do overs” and being relaunched this season — shows that got cut short last season by the writers strike…Lewis is terrific, and since they’ve had all these months to figure out what worked on the series and what did not, I’m hoping this season it’s a better series than last season.

  • The 1997 episode of Trial and Retribution with guest star Helen McCrory will air on ITV3 on Thursday, September 25 at 9 pm. The region 1 DVD will be released in the US on September 30th.

“Well, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure, so floss every day and take your vitamins. Also, on the off chance you’re talking about the show Life, remember that young girl Rachel Crews has been searching for? She’s going to pop up in the premiere, leaving Dani Reese’s bad dad Jack Reese in a terrible position. In fact, Reese is going to have some people putting some serious pressure on him. Oh, and Dani also is going to discover that someone at the station has a crush on her.”

  • Variety carried a story about the challenges the returning sophomore shows will face this season in the aftermath of the writers strike. The article included these comments about Life:

“It’s a very fine line,” says Katherine Pope, president of Universal Media Studios, which produces second-year skein “Life” for NBC. “The expression I use is that a 747 can’t make a sharp right turn. You don’t want to alienate the viewers you have. Although the show was ratings-challenged, the people who watch the show absolutely love it.

“We really need to keep those viewers while inviting new ones. Knowing the strike was looming, we did a final two-parter and resolved a key mystery.”

Pope says “Life” exec producer Rand Ravich plans to focus more on procedural police cases early this season and shift a bit more to the serialized focus on Damian Lewis’ false imprisonment saga later on.

  • NBC Universal has created a very brief page for “The Business of Miracles” (episode 2.03 of Life which will air on October 6th in the US.

“ANOTHER TRUNK ANOTHER BODY—In the season two premiere, detectives Charlie Crews (Damian Lewis) and Dani Reese (Sarah Shahi) are on the hunt for a serial killer when three numbered trunks containing suffocated bodies are found scattered across Los Angeles. With their new boss New York transfer Captain Kevin Tidwell (Donal Logue) pressuring them to get answers, Crews and Reese race to find a connection between the murders before the killer strikes again. Rupert Wyatt’s acclaimed film The Escapist will screen in competition at the Dinard British Film Festival which takes place in France from October 2nd through the 5th; Click here and here for more information.

Jack Foley of Indie London gave The Escapist 4 stars and said:

“The Escapist hooks from the beginning by making clever use of a fractured narrative, cutting between the breakout itself and the build up to it. Hence, it poses questions about its central
characters that are only answered as the film progresses. It also tips its hat to established genre rules without necessarily copying them for exploitative thrills… Cox almost inevitably emerges with the most credit, his wily veteran offering a fascinating character to be around as he’s forced to wake from his slumber to do what’s right by his daughter and cellmate. But there’s strong support from the likes of Fiennes, as a volatile bruiser; Lewis, as a softly spoken killer, and Cooper, as the youngster clearly out of his depth.”

Helen McCrory’s new feature film Flashbacks of a Fool starring Daniel Craig will also screen at the Dinard British Film Festival.

  • Sad news! 😥

Play.com and Tesco are now showing the release date for the region 2 DVD for The Escapist as January 5, 2009 instead of October 13, 2008 as originally listed.

  • Here’s some more information from the lucky blogger who recently spotted Damian in a “Peet’s Coffee and Tea Shop” in Los Angeles. He was with Helen and the children when she saw him, how lovely!

He was indeed with his wife and his two kids. Honestly, I saw him for about a second and didn’t stare too much, so I’m assuming it was his wife. He had one baby on his back and there was another in a stroller, I think. I don’t know what he was wearing. Unfortunately, I am the least observant person ever. I was kind of excited but I played it cool before going out and calling everyone I know.
