On The Lox’s 1998 song Money, Power, & Respect, Lil’ Kim rapped that those three words are what you need in life. It’s now 20 years later, and the third season of Showtime’s hit drama Billions shows why that can be the worst advice.

(Spoilers ahead for those not caught up with seasons 1 and 2)

Over the course of Billions‘ first two seasons, Charles “Chuck” Rhoades Jr (Paul Giamatti), the U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York, has been on a mission to put billionaire Robert “Bobby” Axelrod (Damian Lewis), the hedge fund manager of Axe Capital, behind bars for the nefarious ways Axelrod built his fortune. It’s not easy for Chuck to pin down a man who is every bit his intellectual equal, and up to now the show has largely revolved around a cat-and-mouse game, with Rhoades and Axelrod alternating between the hunted and the hunter. By the end of the second season, Axelrod is finally arrested, thanks to a legally questionable ploy Chuck uses that involves betraying the people he loves.

We were able to preview the first five episodes of season 3 ahead of the season premiere on March 25. The new season picks up following the events of the season 2 finale, which exploded the Billions status quo and left characters trying to reassemble their lives amid the wreckage. No matter how Billions plays out, though, the show centers around the entertaining dynamic of its two lead actors.

Billions Season Three: Creators Take Showtime Series to a Whole New Level – March 6, 2018

“…Many will be damned by the end of the season.”

by Dana Feldman | Forbes | March 6, 2018

Showtime’s original hit drama series Billions returns for its highly-anticipated third season Sunday, March 25, and fans are eager to pick up where they left off at the end of season two. No show has better exemplified the quote made famous by Chinese philosopher Confucius: “Before you embark on a journey of revenge, dig two graves.”

Billions is Showtime’s No. 2 drama series behind Homeland, averaging five million weekly viewers across platforms. The series grew throughout the second season on Sunday nights by more than 35% from premiere-to-finale.

Starring Oscar nominee and Emmy and Golden Globe winner Paul Giamatti and Emmy and Golden Globe winner Damian Lewis, the show centers around the battle between hard-charging U.S. Attorney Chuck Rhoades (Giamatti) and billionaire hedge fund king Bobby “Axe” Axelrod (Lewis) as the two continue to battle it out in an effort to destroy the other, even if the end result is self-destruction. This season the battle picks up in a world that has shifted on its axis. Though both are just as determined to destroy the other, each is simultaneously faced with battling for their own survival amid new forces at play and powerful enemies.

‘Billions’ Cast And Their Athlete Comparisons

by Jeff Eisenband – The Post Game – May 8, 2017

“Billions” closed its second season this past Sunday, with a finale that — spoiler — left Chuck Rhoades Jr. feeling like a champion and Bobby Axelrod feeling unloved and less powerful. Season 3  of the Showtime series should feature Axelrod fighting his case while Rhoades attempts to run for governor of New York.

Although the season is over, that does not mean the conversation about “Billions” content is. We can always compare the cast to professional athletes, as we did below.

Bobby Axelrod: LeBron James

Axe is The Chosen One. He’s a hedge fund manager from a humble background who is ruthless in the business world. He takes every competitive advantage possible to be the best at what he does. James maneuvered to formulate the Big Three in Miami and then shifted the NBA balance of power to Cleveland, using the media to push his agenda (and desire to trade for Kevin Love). Both Axe and LeBron will have legacies tainted by their questionable tactics, but both insist they operated within the fair boundaries of their respective fields.
