Damian Makes 2020’s London Power 100 List – March 10, 2020

Damian Ranks #38 on London Power 100 List

by Gingersnap | damian-lewis.com | March 10, 2020

Damian Lewis moves up in the ranks, from #46 last year to #38 this year. Congrats!

Meet the most influential people in London. The new London Power 100 was published today, which is an annual list of the 100 most influential people in London and includes a wide variety of high achievers and power players in the city and from the city of London.

From June each year, two teams of researchers begin curating and researching names for the list which are put forward to a panel of judges for consideration. This part of the process referred to as the “nominating process” is open to the public who can submit their suggestions to the judges via email.

From early November the judging panel begin scrutinizing the list and place individuals put forward in order, taking into consideration their achievements both past and present. Following which, the President of London Power 100 is advised of the final list by the middle of January. After reviewing, the list is published in March.

President Nicholas Taylor stated, “I have had the pleasure of working with and alongside many local businesses, entrepreneurs, charities and media personalities across film, music, and sport who have in some way influenced London’s landscape. It is not surprising that 2020’s list is made up of individuals who have in some way left their mark on the City, both past and present, from a broad spectrum of skill sets. Congratulations to this year’s inductees.”

Major stars such as Idris Elba, Benedict Cumberbatch, Damian Lewis, Naomie Harris, Tom Hiddleston, Cara Delevingne, Letitia Wright, David Beckham, Gavin Rossdale, Rita Ora and Mo Farah joined veteran Londoners Sir Michael Caine, Dame Helen Mirren, and Dame Joan Collins on the list, which also features royalty like Prince Harry, Meghan Markle, Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, and Charles, Prince of Wales, along with politicians, restaurateurs and business leaders.

Newcomers include British billionaire S. P. Hinduja, singer Harry Styles and Tottenham MP David Lammy whilst Dragons’ Den tycoon Tej Lalvani and West Ham United Football Club’s CEO Baroness Karren Brady all made a debut on the list.

Vote for Damian to be the Next Bond – Jan 11, 2020

Who Will Actually Be The Next James Bond? An In-Depth Analysis

by Tom Nicholson | Esquire | January 11, 2020

Who’s going to take over from Daniel Craig as James Bond when he swaps his Walther PPK for a P45? Who knows. This far ahead of Bond 25’s 2020 release you might as well get the Ouija board out to ask the spirit of Cubby Broccoli what he reckons.

Nonetheless, there are a few orthodoxies to point the way. Traditionally, it’s been a role which elevates actors to the A-list rather than being an A-list vehicle. Look at where past Bonds were in their careers when they got the gig: Sean Connery was an undistinguished jobbing actor best known for fighting leprechauns in Disney’s begorrah-and-blimey Irish tale Darby O’Gill and the Little People; George Lazenby was a car salesman turned chocolate advert mascot who bumped into Broccoli at the barbers; Pierce Brosnan had a perm.

You’ll need a history of hefty, critically respected film parts these days too. Daniel Craig had Layer Cake, Munich and a role as Ted Hughes in Sylvia on his showreel before Bond, and the next will need a similarly solid CV as well as having convinced when jumping out of helicopters and the like. Then there’s the general sense of Bond-ishness: Connery “moved like a panther”, as Cubby’s wife Dana Broccoli put it, and that sense of muscular virility has been an essential part of each Bond actor on screen. These are the 12 frontrunners:

A new year is upon us, so what better time to take a look back at our favourite films of the last 12 months? That’s right, it’s Den Of Geek’s annual movies of the year countdown, as voted for by our writers.

The rules? Well, eligible movies had to have been released in the UK in 2019 – and streaming exclusives such as feature-length Netflix and Amazon Prime originals were included. We asked each of our writers to vote for their top five films, ranked on a points-based system, and then collated the entries to come up with our final list.

So, the votes have been counted and verified and we can now reveal the results. Here are the films that the Den Of Geek writers voted as the top 10 movies of the year…

Billions: Most Underappreciated Quality Series on Television

by Mark Dawidziak | Cleveland.com | December 29, 2019

This was the year, long predicted, when we reached about 500 scripted television shows. Clinching the record were the fall launches of such high-profile streaming services as Disney Plus and Apple TV Plus.

Let’s put that in some kind of perspective. That’s 500 scripted comedies and dramas (or some mixture of both), which doesn’t count the hundreds of other shows that fall into the reality, game show, documentary, news, talk, magazine, sports or any of the many other programming formats found on the traditional networks, PBS, cable channels and streaming services.

Compare that with the total number of shows currently running on Broadway (33) or the number of new Broadway productions this year (38). Or compare that to the total number of American films that will be released this year: 230.

Piers Morgan Reviews His Most Memorable Encounters of 2019

by Piers Morgan | for the Daily Mail | December 28, 2019

Piers Morgan writes,

2019 has been a year when I’ve attended some brilliant parties, enjoyed myriad deliciously enjoyable Twitter spats and had random encounters with megastars such as Ariana Grande that still make me chuckle many months later.

Here, then, are the 2019 Morgan Awards:

MOST HONEST ADMISSION

Damian Lewis and I debated team spirit, agreeing that it’s important to success, but that so is harnessing great talent, even if it’s egotistical and erratic.

‘There may be no “i’s” in team,’ I said, ‘but there are three in “winning side”.’

‘The bottom line,’ Lewis concurred, ‘is you put up with dickheads if they’re worth it.’

Best Reviewed Scripted TV Shows of the Year According to Metacritic

by Terri Schwartz | IGN | December 24, 2019

With more original scripted TV shows being released than there are days of the year, chances are you — like us — are using the holidays to catch up on hidden gems you may have missed. There are so many different ways to categorize what makes great TV: it could be a recommendation from a trusted friend, buzz around a major title or even the suggestion of a media outlet you like and respect.

In the spirit of the latter category, we have gathered up the 14 best-reviewed scripted TV shows of the year according to review aggregate website Metacritic. These series met universal acclaim from the critics who reviewed them, ranging from long-running series like Veep and Billions to newcomers like Undone and Back to Life.

For some more information on how Metacritic determines their critic grade, they explain their scale of 0 to 100 according to the following parameters: “We carefully curate a large group of the world’s most respected critics, assign scores to their reviews, and apply a weighted average to summarize the range of their opinions. The result is a single number that captures the essence of critical opinion in one Metascore.”

The 100 Best Shows Right Now – Sept 9, 2019

TV Guide Ranks Peak TV’s Finest Offerings

by Liam Matthews | TV Guide | September 9, 2019

Game of Thrones‘ watch has ended, Fleabag raised an eyebrow to us for the last time, Crazy Ex-Girlfriend took its final bow, and The Big Bang Theory finally fixed that dang elevator. The last 12 months brought fans of some of television’s biggest shows the one thing they’ve been missing: closure.

But even after the conclusion of so many important series, thus rendering those programs ineligible for our ranking of the 100 best shows on right now (words mean stuff!), the caliber of content may be stronger than ever before. In the last month alone, viewers have been able to watch new episodes of GLOWSuccessionDear White People, and Power, and catch up on beloved series like The CrownThe Marvelous Mrs. MaiselSupernatural, and The Good Fight before their new seasons premiere. And who hasn’t gotten sucked into a marathon of SVU or Snapped at least once over the past year? This lineup will only grow in the future, with the launch of Disney Plus, Apple TV Plus, HBO Max, NBCUniversal’s streaming platform, and, heck, even Quibi? Quibi! (Say it out loud, it’s fun.)

That’s our take, at least: Whittling down the list of best shows right now from some 1,700 options in this age of Peak TV was a painstaking task, and our editors and writers spent weeks arguing over which shows should make the cut. That some favorites were left off our definitive list speaks to the era; never has watching television been more rewarding than right now. These are the 100 best shows at this very moment.

Picking Your Favorite Television Detective – Aug 11, 2019

‘Bleeding Cool’ Makes Their Picks

by Jeremy Konrad | Bleeding Cool | August 10, 2019

We here at Bleeding Cool love bringing you the latest news about comics, toys, movies, and of course, television. What you don’t know is that behind the scenes battles rage and arguments galore are settled on a daily basis. What are these about? The important things, like which Doctor is THE Doctor. Which Michael Scott quote rules them all. Is Twin Peaks ruined forever after the Showtime season. You know, the BIG questions. So, we decided to bring you our answers. This week, we pick our favorite television detectives of all-time. Some of our writers made their choices, let’s see if you agree with them.

Andy Wilson: Damian Lewis as Detective Charlie Crews — Life (NBC)

Life was what they took from him. Life is what he got back.” Falsely convicted, Det. Charlie Crews (Damian Lewis) emerges from prison after 12 years and the recipient of a $50 million cash settlement and returns to his former job as an LAPD detective with a new zen attitude, an affinity for fresh fruit, and a secret side investigation to find out who set him up. Among those on his suspects list is the hero cop father of his new partner, who herself is kind of a mess, dealing with drug addiction and daddy issues. Life was an amazing show, cancelled too soon after only a season and a half– a victim of the 2007-08 Writers Strike. Crews was an amazing detective because of the quirks and new outlook he got while in prison. He was also single-mindedly focused in a way that was almost scary as he searched for… revenge? justice? We’ll never exactly know. But he’s the only cop who could ever get away with driving a Maserati Quattroporte riddled with bullet holes, or a custom Bentley Continental GT listening to a Buddhist tract on attachment to material possessions and say, “I am not attached to this car.” He was so chill, so zen, so focused. The writing on this show was fantastic, and it’s why Charlie Crews is the greatest tv detective.

Billions: The Relentless Pursuit of Power, With Wit – May 19, 2019

No Game of Thrones or Veep? Here’s What to Watch Next

by Zack Stanton | Politico Magazine | May 19, 2019

Americans hate politics, right? The disingenuousness, the backstabbing, the sycophancy, the preening and posturing, the empowered elite, the way wealth buys influence, its dynastic nature, the sense that good people get torn apart, the way it feels disconnected from the concerns of the people.

But we love to watch all that on TV.

When Game of Thrones airs its final episode Sunday, it will end the last watercooler show on television—it was ubiquitous, inescapable and era-defining. And it also marks the end of an astonishing run of political TV. For all the medieval froofery and baroque violence, GoT was fundamentally a political drama—a show built around the quest for power, the conflict between idealism and pragmatism, and the uncomfortably blurred lines between hero and villain when it comes to exercising real power.

Its counterpart on the comedy side was Veep, the sitcom that ended last week, known for its acidic, rapid dialogue, venal characters and inside-Washington jokes. For all its slapstick, people who work in politics tend to see it as cutting painfully close to reality, far more so than high-toned power dramas such as The West Wing or House of Cards.

Monday morning, political obsessives will wake up bereft of both shows, with no destination for the next gut-wrenching turns of the wheel of power, nothing to click on for crisp mockery of their day jobs. So what to watch next?

Here’s POLITICO’s guide to filling that hole, with shows new and old:
