Billions Season 5 Returns in 2021 and Renews for Season 6

by Elaine Low | Variety | October 1, 2020

Billions has been renewed for a sixth season at Showtime — and fans will be pleased to know that five new episodes of Season 5 will air in 2021, after the ongoing coronavirus pandemic put a wrench in the premium cabler’s scheduling for the year.

David Costabile, who plays Wags on the show, recently shared with TV Fanatic that season 5 filming would commence around March, 2021 and they will film season 6 back-to-back,

“We will go back and finish the end of the last few episodes of season five, and then we will continue working straight through and shoot season six. So next year, it will be an onslaught of Billions because we will just work from when we start until when we finish season six. They’ve been writing since July, I think. That’s exciting. The writer’s room has been up and swinging. My guess is that by the time we start, everything will be written. We’re probably not starting until around March shooting again, and the [CoVid-19] protocols, my guess, will still be in effect then.”

Damian Lewis Poised To Star In Cold War Limited Series – July 7, 2020

A Spy Among Friends

by Jake Kanter, Peter White, Nellie Andrea | Deadline | July 7, 2020

EXCLUSIVE: Billions’ Damian Lewis is in negotiations to headline and executive produce a limited series adaptation of bestselling Cold War espionage thriller A Spy Among Friends for Spectrum Originals and UK streamer BritBox.

The six-episode A Spy Among Friends, based on Ben Macintyre’s book, comes from former Homeland executive producer Alexander Cary, Sony Pictures Television and ITV Studios. While filming has been delayed due to COVID-19, production is expected to recommence shortly, with a tentative release planned for the fall of 2021.

A Spy Among Friends follows the defection of notorious British intelligence officer and KGB double agent, Kim Philby (TBD), through the lens of his complex relationship with MI6 colleague and close friend, Nicholas Elliott (Lewis). The show examines espionage through their friendship, the fallout of which affects East-West relations to this day.

Philby was a British spy who notoriously defected to the Soviet Union in the 1950s, betraying secrets to the Russians in the early years of the Cold War. He and Elliott entered the spy game together, but as they rose through the MI6 ranks, Philby turned double agent.

The double-hander was described by the New York Times as having the tropes of an Ian Fleming or John le Carré novel. Indeed, the book itself contains an afterword from spy story master and The Night Manager author le Carré.

Apple Launches In-House Studio, Sets Band of Brothers Follow-Up Series – Oct 11, 2019

Masters of the Air

by Will Thorne | Variety | October 11, 2019

Apple is set to produce its first in-house series.

The show in question is Masters of the Air, a follow-up to the Band of Brothers and The Pacific series executive produced by Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks. The legendary duo are on board once again, which comes as no surprise given that Spielberg was a prominent figure at the Apple TV Plus launch event in March. Masters of the Air will also be a limited drama and represents the first series greenlit with Apple serving as the studio. The tech giant has placed worldwide video heads Zack Van Amburg and Jamie Erlicht in charge of overseeing its new studio.

Based on the book by Donald L. Miller, Masters of the Air is said to follow the true, deeply personal story of the American bomber boys in World War II who brought the war to Hitler’s doorstep. The series is being written by Band of Brothers alumnus John Orloff, who is also a co-executive producer. The critically acclaimed Band of Brothers miniseries aired on HBO back in 2001, and featured Homeland and Billions star Damian Lewis in one of the lead roles. The show won a handful of Emmys and a Golden Globe, while its successor The Pacific was also an awards season success.

Spielberg is exec producing via his Amblin Television banner, alongside Hanks and Gary Goetzman for Playtone. Graham Yost, also an alumnus from Band of Brothers, will co-executive produce alongside Amblin TV’s Darryl Frank and Justin Falvey and Steven Shareshian of Playtone.

Masters of the Air will stream exclusively on Apple TV Plus and represents the second project for Apple to hail from Spielberg’s Amblin Television…

Broadcasters Sign Up for A+E’s Damian Lewis: Spy Wars – Oct 11, 2019

Going Global

by Joseph O’Halloran | Rapid TV News | October 11, 2019  -and-
by Peter White | Deadline | October 11, 2019

As we head into the leading global content trade show and world’s entertainment market MIPCOM 2019 next week, A+E Networks and A+E Networks UK have signed a slew of top international broadcasters for its latest factual co-production, Damian Lewis: Spy Wars.

Earlier this year we reported here that Spy Wars was heading to the Smithsonian Channel for US markets, a joint venture between CBS Corporation’s Showtime and the Smithsonian Institute. And now it seems other broadcasters will be joining Smithsonian Channel’s lead. The docu-drama currently airing on History UK and Blaze in the UK will now be available in the following markets: Blue Ant (Canada); POP TV (Slovenia); Bilibil.com (China); TVNZ (New Zealand); Historia and Atresmedia (Spain). A+E Networks says that multiple other deals are in negotiation. No word yet when television viewing audiences in other countries will see Damian hit their small screens, but rumor has it early 2020 for US customers.

In the series, award-winning actor Damian Lewis unpacks some of the most thrilling covert missions in modern-day history with the help of new declassified information, high-profile experts, and intelligence officers who were there. The program ranges from the most notorious spy exchange of recent times to the fake film production that freed Americans during the 1979 Iranian hostage crisis to in-depth profiles of the world’s most skilled and lethal double agents and has been described as James Bond meets every John le Carré thriller you’ve ever read.

Damian Lewis: Spy Wars is executive produced by Alaska TV’s Chris Fouracre, Ian Lamarra, and Paul Sommers in association with Lewis’ own recently launched Rookery Productions with brother Gareth Lewis.
