‘Billions’ Makes NPR’s List of Five TV Shows to Binge Watch – Jan 4, 2018

Five TV Shows to Binge-Watch During a Winter Storm

by Eric Deggans – NPR – January 4, 2018

Source: Showtime

The snow and severe cold of the “bomb cyclone” currently hitting the East Coast is no joke. But for a TV nerd, a storm that shuts down work and school means more time for binge-watching!

It may be only a day or two, so viewing choices are crucial. Can’t waste time with dramas that go nowhere or marginally funny sitcoms (yes, Twin Peaks and Curb Your Enthusiasm, I’m talking about you). I’m here to give you some suggestions tailored to your tastes. Hopefully, these shows will act like a hot bowl of chicken soup and a thick, warm blanket.

If you’re a sucker for stories about blood feuds between powerful men …

Showtime’s Billions was one of the best dramas no one talked about last year. Its most recent, 12-episode season is available for viewing through the premium cable channel’s streaming platforms, and earlier seasons are available through Amazon. The show features Damian Lewis as the billionaire head of a top New York hedge fund and Paul Giamatti as the U.S. attorney obsessed with arresting him. Giamatti’s final scene in the season is one of the best moments of acting I saw on TV last year.

Billions: The Top 10 Television Shows of 2017 – Dec 26, 2017

The Top 10 Television Shows of 2017

by Damon Martin – NerdCoreMovement – December 26, 2017

Source: Showtime

Number 10 – Riverdale
Number 9 – Preacher
Number 8 – Ozark
Number 7 – Game of Thrones
Number 6 – Stranger Things
Number 5 – Better Call Saul
Number 4 – Twin Peaks
Number 3 – Mr. Robot
Number 2 – The Leftovers

And number one goes to Billions!

Watching a sparring match between a U.S. District Attorney and a wealthy hedge fund manager probably doesn’t sound all that exciting until you witness how Billions has unfolded over the past two seasons. The first season was riveting but the second season was absolutely mind blowing.

U.S. attorney Chuck Rhoades will do anything and everything in his power to bring down hedge fund billionaire Bobby Axelrod but after taking it on the chin at the conclusion of the first season, he’s forced to regroup and refocus his efforts. Simultaneously, there’s an investigation launched to look into Rhoades to make sure he’s been following the letter of the law as well as enforcing it. As for Axelrod, he’s trying to solidify Axe Capitol after taking a few hits but thankfully he runs into an ambitious intern who ends up being his secret weapon. Obviously, Chuck and Axe eventually come face-to-face before the season is over and you won’t find a better clash on television without turning on the latest UFC fights.

Billions is arguably the most well written show on all of television right now with stand out performances from all of the lead actors and actresses including Paul Giamatti, Damian Lewis, Maggie Siff, Malin Akerman and Toby Leonard. By the end of the season, you’ll be in awe of how these characters are willing to sacrifice everything to get over on each other — it’s like all the twists and turns of The Sopranos but without all the bloodshed.

Where to Watch: Showtime

Highlight: Episode 10 ‘With or Without You’ — While the bulk of this series takes place in offices and boardrooms, this episode takes Axe out of his comfort zone as he’s desperate to save his marriage while Chuck finds himself staring at an even more powerful role as he looks to transition from the U.S. Attorney’s office to a new home in politics.

‘Billions’: One of the Best TV Musical Moments of 2017 – Dec 20, 2017

‘Billions’: One of the Best TV Musical Moments of 2017 – Dec 20, 2017

by Sean T. Collins – Vulture – December 20, 2017

After the death of David Bowie, every showrunner and music supervisor worth their salt crammed the Thin White Duke’s music into their series. Death is the cheapest heat there is, dramatically speaking, and even a shoddy use of a late, beloved artist’s music can invest the scene it accompanies with emotional power for the audience. In the case of the climax of “Golden Frog Time,” the pivotal episode of Billions’ stellar second season, something like the reverse is true. Showrunners Brian Koppelman and David Levien and music supervisor Jim Black capped off the series-best hour with Tom Petty’s exuberant celebration of underdog victory months before the singer’s death, unwittingly providing him with a fitting tribute far in advance.

“Even the Losers” is sprinkled throughout the episode’s introductory section, a complex web of flashbacks and time jumps in which billionaire investor Bobby Axelrod (Damian Lewis) plots to destroy the IPO of a juice company funded in part by his nemesis, crusading New York attorney general Chuck Rhoades (Paul Giamatti).

‘Billions’ of Recognition at the Critics Choice Nominations – Dec 6, 2017

Billions of Recognition at the Critics Choice Nominations

by Gingersnap – damian-lewis.com – December 6, 2017

Source: Showtime

It seems every project Damian touches or is a part of turns to gold…or should I say, billions?  Whether he’s receiving recognition for his work individually or collectively, he sure can pick them! And while we love when he’s in the spotlight receiving the recognition he deserves, we also know he is proud of his fellow colleagues who he gets to work with 6 months out of the year on the set of Billions.

Today two of his Billions co-stars were nominated by the Critics Choice Awards – Paul Giamatti for Best Actor in a Drama Series for his portrayal as U.S. District Attorney Chuck Rhoades – and Asia Kate Dillon for Best Supporting Actor in a Drama Series for their portrayal as Taylor Mason, the whip-smart hedge fund intern of Damian’s ‘Bobby Axelrod’ on the show.

Asia spoke of their work with Damian on Billions back in June of this year at the Split Screens Festival. How does it feel to work with Damian Lewis? Fan Fun with Damian Lewis writes:

“I was not rattled. He is so generous and considerate and kind and compassionate and down to earth.”

Asia says Damian has the ability to totally engage with you but then when they say “roll” he just snaps into it, feeling and reacting truthfully to the moment in the imaginary circumstances of the world. Having a partner as generous as Damian makes the experience extraordinary, they say, because they can only be as good as their screen partner allows them to be.

“Because Damian has such an ability to listen and react truthfully in the moment, I’m able to be totally absorbed in that world and that is a great joy.”

So it comes as no surprise Asia is nominated for Best Supporting Actor when they work with the likes of Damian Lewis!

Back in June Damian tweeted support of his co-worker Asia:

Damian Films Scene With Kelly AuCoin on the Set of ‘Billions’ – Nov 22, 2017

Behind the Scenes With Damian and Kelly AuCoin

by Andrew Bullock for MailOnline | DailyMail | November 22, 2017

NEWS ALERT:   What do we have here? It’s Dollar Bill and Axe together again! Our favorite actor was seen filming yet another scene in New York City while on the set of Showtime’s hit series Billions, alongside Kelly AuCoin who plays Dollar Bill Stearn.

Source: DailyMail

On Monday he was seen shooting scenes with on-screen wife Malin Akerman on the streets of New York City.

But Damian Lewis swapped Malin for co-star Kelly AuCoin on Tuesday – and found himself unsure where to look as Kelly dropped his slacks in front of him.  In what looked to be a comic scene in the American drama series, Kelly stood before Damian in just a pair of checked boxer shorts, on the street, in full view of anyone passing by. The scene appeared to feature some sort of tiff between Bobby and Kelly’s character Dollar, resulting in the awkward trouser drop.

The pair were seen shooting the scene outside of a parking garage, as Damian’s character Bobby Axelrod got into a navy Porsche at the end and drove away.

Damian Spotted Filming ‘Billions’ Season 3 in New York City – November 20, 2017

Mr. and Mrs. Axelrod on the Set of Billions

by Gingersnap | damian-lewis.com | November 20, 2017

Source: DailyMail

NEWS ALERT:   Our favorite actor was caught on camera! Damian was seen filming in New York City on the set of Showtime’s hit series Billions, along with Malin Akerman who plays his television wife Lara Axelrod.

As Billions fans know, we saw these two at the end of last season grappling with a strained marriage due to Axe’s business decisions and personal choices.

To research the current filming timeline a bit, showrunner and co-creator Brian Koppelman shared a photo on Instagram of the first table read of Billions season three back on August 30.

On September 4, Page Six reported Billions cast and crew celebrated a season three kick-off event with a high-end whiskey tasting at Mario Batali’s Del Posto restaurant.  And on September 28 it was reported Damian filmed an intense confrontation with Maggie Siff, who plays Wendy Rhoades, the in-house performance coach at Axe Capital.

All seemed quiet in October. Then, on November 14, Koppelman tweeted they were almost halfway through shooting season three. Billions continues to shoot the highly anticipated third season with reports of a 2018 release.
