This weekend marks the return of ‘Bridgerton,’ a series that celebrates society journalism—and lusting after Brits. To celebrate, here’s an exploration of the different types of attractive male British actors—from the prototypes to the ones currently ruling the screen and a select group of men who currently dominate Hollywood: Hot British Actors™ (HBAs).

The HBA is hardly a new phenomenon; it’s been part of the American cultural furniture since your grandparents were down bad (or whatever the postwar equivalent is) for Sean Connery and Richard Burton. But now these actors are everywhere—wielding affected American accents like a plumber wields a wrench. They’re hiding in plain sight, not just in our romantic dramas and superhero movies, but our network sitcoms and prime-time soaps as well. Paul Revere is rummaging through his saddlebags right now, trying to figure out how many lanterns to light for “by screen.”

Mastering an American accent has become a rite of passage for British and Australian actors, and assorted other former British colonies. It’s an interesting phenomenon: in America we send most of our young actors through the teenybopper homogenizing machine, which spits out enough semi-interchangeable over-coiffed influencers every year to fill Disney Channel sitcoms and country music contracts. The downside of which is that casting directors looking for someone “authentic” looking frequently land on actors born and raised thousands of miles away. Half of our superheroes are English and Australian.

This, in turn, has led to a class of actors so good at American accents that hearing their natural ones in interviews is downright shocking. This past month alone has seen the release of Judas And The Black Messiah, starring British actor Daniel Kaluuya as American revolutionary Fred Hampton, and now Cherry, starring Brit Tom Holland as an Ohioan with an opiate addiction (actually Holland’s second turn as an Ohioan after Devil All The Time). Kaluuya looks like a lock for a Best Actor nomination, but both are quickly proving themselves masters of the American accent, and American regional accents.

Damian Ranks #46 on London Power 100 List

The new London Power 100 was published today. Actors, actresses and producers made up 20% of the list which shines an alternative spotlight on the key movers and shakers amongst London’s elite.

London Power 100 President Nicholas Taylor explained the list and how it was decided: “After months of deliberating and research the list has collated the top 100 power players worth knowing in London.”

Major stars such as Idris Elba, Daniel Kaluuya, Benedict Cumberbatch, Damian Lewis, Naomie Harris, Tom Hiddleston, Keira Knightley, Letitia Wright, Noel Clarke, Thandie Newton and Jourdan Dunn joined veteran Londoners Sir Michael Caine, Dame Helen Mirren, Dame Barbara Windsor and Dame Joan Collins on the list, which also features royalty, politicians, restauranteurs and business leaders.

Commenting on the film industry’s prominence on the list, Nicholas Taylor said, “film is an industry in which Britain is a world leader – our actors and filmmakers are amongst the very best on the planet and I am delighted to see this diverse, all-encompassing sector so well represented. London is and always has been the very centre of the British Film Industry and the list reflects that with Londoners covering every aspect of the movie industry from the stars of billion dollar Hollywood blockbusters to homegrown independent films.”

Of course we here at damian-lewis.com know Damian is British, but many new fans are still shocked to learn he is a native from across the pond. Perhaps it’s because Damian has been known to stay in his American persona both on and off the set, even while grocery shopping or guest appearing on a talk show, to some degree. British Vogue released a list of dream boys they’d like to see play the next James Bond.

As speculation amped up last week about who will follow in Daniel Craig’s 007 footsteps, Idris Elba sent the rumour mill into overdrive with an “Is he? Isn’t he?” Twitter tease.

“My name’s Elba, Idris Elba,” he posted, sparking mass excitement amongst his followers, before appearing to dismiss the widespread claims by advising people not to believe “the hype”.

Here, we chart the contenders – the likely and the left-field – who could step into the famous spy’s sleek tuxedo for future incarnations of the franchise (when Craig does indeed hang up his Speedos for good).

#3 – Damian Lewis

One of the older candidates in the running at 47, the actor has the gentlemanly air down pat and was an early front runner for the next Bond – particularly thanks to the fervent following he garnered after his acting skills were brought to the masses in Homeland.
