The Reserve Rope – Feb 27, 2021

BBC Radio 4 Drama

by Gingersnap | damian-lewis.com | February 27, 2021

The Matterhorn was conquered on 14th July 1865 by Edward Whymper. But four men died on the descent. Damian Lewis stars as Whymper, forever tormented by the tragedy. Jonathan Myerson’s drama speculates on what went wrong and why. The climbing team were roped together on the way down but at least two were inexperienced and – for reasons never fully explained – attached together with rope that was unsuitable for holding the weight of a man. A swift inquest was held and Whymper was exonerated. But some people never forgave him – especially the 8th Marquess of Queensbury, father to Douglas Hadow, one of the dead. This radio series originally aired in March, 2016.

Damian Recites Sir Herbert Read’s Poem ‘My Company’ – Nov 8, 2018

The Josephine Hart Poetry Programme

by Gingersnap | damian-lewis.com | November 8, 2018

In 2008, Josephine Hart (who died in 2011), explored the work of great poets with the unforgettable verse from the trenches of the First World War. She was joined live at the British Library by the actors Robert Hardy, Daniel Stevens, Damian Lewis and Elizabeth McGovern who give voice to the suffering, sarcasm, wit, and loss expressed by the poets of the Great War.

We are pleased to hear programmes from the BBC radio archive that traces the impact the First World War had upon poets, both soldiers, and those left behind. Listen to actors read some of the most profoundly moving artistic responses to the terrible impact of war ever written.

Click here to listen. The Josephine Hart segment appears to begin at 16:00, Damian is introduced around 17:55, and Damian begins reading the poem My Company by Sir Herbert Read around 26:00.

Desert Island Discs with Damian Lewis – Nov 30, 2014

Nostalgia and Good Tunes with Elvis Returned

by Gingersnap | damian-lewis.com | November 30, 2014

Desert Island Discs (DID) is a radio program broadcast on BBC Radio 4.  It was first broadcast on the BBC Forces Programme in January, 1942.

Each week a guest, called a ‘castaway’ is asked to choose eight recordings, a book, and a luxury item that they would take with them if they were stranded on a desert island.  The program is hosted by Kirsty Young and Damian, who was a castaway on November 30, 2014, discussed his life and the reasons for his choices.

You can listen to the entire Damian Lewis DID here and download it to listen on the go, too.

His selections attest to the fact that he is, in his own words “a nostalgic person, naturally, remembering people, happy moments in my life, and just good cheers.”  They are all reminders of happy, fun and romantic times, referring to his family, his parents, his wife, and his children.

Damian’s Book Choice:

“This has caused a lot of consternation, I think I’m gonna go with J. M. Roberts’ History of the World.”

Damian’s Luxury Item:

“I would quite like to take my whittling kit. I could whittle useless object… I was given a whittling kit… by Helen, and I’m gonna whittle as the sun sets… I’ve got to find a way to get the trees down that’s the only thing I haven’t quite worked out… I might whittle little busts of my family to start with…”
