The Biggest Shows Affected by the 2023 Writers Strike

From Billions to Severance: Some of Your Favorite Shows are Already Seeing Significant Delays Due to the WGA Strike

by Grant Rindner | GQ Magazine | May 12, 2023

The ongoing writers strike may seem, at first glance, like a much bigger deal to the writers affected than to the average TV watcher. The longer it goes on, however, the greater the chances that one of your favorite shows could be among those disrupted. That’s how a strike works, after all, meant to show that “business as usual” is impossible without the contributions of the striking workers. Some of television’s biggest shows have already been affected. Since the Writers Guild of America’s strike was officially authorized on May 2, with Severance, Stranger Things, and the latest Game of Thrones spinoff among the shows being halted or otherwise directly impacted.

Issues motivating the strike are complex, but hinge in part on the industry’s move into streaming, and writers’ ensuing demands for contracts that reflect the new television paradigm. As GQ has covered, streaming doesn’t provide the same continuing residuals that have represented a writer’s “gold ring” for decades. The last writers strike took place in 2007, a time before streaming became the dominant method of distribution, and the WGA is also working to get protections related to the nascent use of AI in television writing.

Damian has been all over the streets of New York this week, either with his guitar busking or with his girlfriend Alison Mosshart. But now it’s down to business as he reprises his role as Bobby Axelrod for season 7 of Billions. Damian is seen here with Billions showrunners David Levien and Brian Koppelman at the restaurant Rao’s in East Harlem, with what looks like script pages in hand for episode filming 😉 Damian is definitely sporting that “Axey” hair. Also pictured is Kentucky head men’s basketball coach John Calipari who took to Instagram today to share this photo with the caption “Bumped into my friends David Levien and Brian Koppelman today and they were hanging with Damian Lewis.” View more images in our Gallery here

We’re looking forward to seeing Axe back on our small screens soon!

David Costabile Teases Billions Season 5 Return, Gives Season 6 Update

Filming Rest of Season 5 and Season 6 At Same Time Was Tricky

by Meaghan Darwish | TV Insider | August 24, 2021

David Costabile continues to entertain with his role as hedonistic henchman Mike “Wags” Wagner in Showtime’s Billions which resumes its fifth season beginning Sunday, September 5.

After more than a year off-air, it’s a welcome return for sure as fans were left on a cliffhanger following Todd Krakow’s (Danny Strong) ousting as secretary, leaving Axe (Damian Lewis) and Wags’ future plans in the lurch. “Well, I can’t really tease anything, other than nothing,” Costabile jokes, before teasing,”I can say [that it’s] very distinctly possible that we would continue down this particular perilous path.”

It’s also been one bumpy ride getting back to filming, as Costabile recalls a roughly year-long gap between filming Season 5 episodes. “We finished last March 12th, and we were on the eighth episode of the fifth season at the time,” he details. “We had done about half of it. And we came back at the beginning of March this year and started again.”

Billions Second Half of Season 5 Stayed True To Original Plan Despite Pandemic Break

Showtime’s TCA Session

by Alexandra Del Rosario | Deadline | August 24, 2021

After more than a year, Billions will return for the second half of its fifth season without skipping a beat, Showtime boss Gary Levine shared during the premium network’s TCA session on Tuesday.

The drama, starring Paul Giamatti and Damian Lewis will return for the second half of Season 5 on September 5, with Season 6 following shortly in January. Levine said that despite the year-long break, audiences can jump right back in – the same way actors did amid the Covid-19 pandmeic.

“We did make a few adjustments in shooting the last five episodes post-pandemic to allow for shooting in a pandemic,” he said. “Story-wise, we stayed true to the original plan. Having seen those five episodes they come back just shot out of a cannon and you are immediately thrown back into the story — no need to review the earlier episodes.”

Billions Season 5 Returns This Fall

Showtime Sets Season 5 Fall Premiere For Drama

by Alexandra Del Rosario  | Deadline  | June 10, 2021

Showtime’s Billions will return for its fifth season this fall.

The Damian Lewis and Paul Giamatti-fronted legal drama will return Sunday, September 5 at 9 p.m. ET/PT with five new episodes.

In the second half of season five, the presence of powerful billionaire Mike Prince (Corey Stoll) sends ripples through Axe Capital and gives Chuck Rhoades (Giamatti) a potential new weapon in his fight against Bobby Axelrod (Lewis). Alliances form, get ripped apart and form anew, and everyone from Taylor (Asia Kate Dillon) to Wendy (Maggie Siff) gets roped into the conflict, which comes very close to destroying all they hold dear. The series also stars David Costabile, Condola Rashad, Kelly AuCoin and Jeffrey DeMunn. Jeanane Garafolo will guest star as Winslow, the hip owner of a legal cannabis corp.

Billions, even before its fifth season launches on Showtime, has been renewed for season six. The sixth season is set to premiere early next year.

50 Best Shows/Movies on Amazon Prime Video Now

Billions, Season 1-5 Streaming

by Allison Picurro  | TV Guide | May 27, 2021

The joke that “there’s more to Amazon than just free 2-day shipping” has been made too many times to still be funny at this point, but it’s actually true! The streaming service has a whole library of TV shows and movies to check out, and the offerings go beyond the ones you might already know about.

In order to keep the list as relevant as possible, we’re stressing the best recent releases, Amazon Prime Video originals, and critics’ favorites. But we’re also putting our own personal spin on the list, with underrated gems we’ve been recommending to our friends, ageless classics, and important selections that highlight diverse voices.

Billions

For fans of: Capitalism, but make it camp; pissing contests
Number of seasons: 5 (renewed for Season 6, date TBD)

Showtime’s financial soap is part prestige drama and part grown-up frat party, following the reckless assholes of a Wall Street hedge fund as they accumulate wealth and eat sushi off naked women. That grotesquery is off-putting at first, but it soon becomes the reason to watch as the toxic masculinity sirens become music to your ears. And if you enjoy acting, Damian Lewis playing the hedge fund CEO and Paul Giamatti as the government lawyer trying to take him down will please. –Tim Surette [Trailer]
