Soccer Aid 2022: England vs World XI

United By Play

by Gingersnap | damian-lewis.com | June 12, 2022

If you thought the World Cup was going to be the biggest sporting event of the year, think again because the world’s biggest celebrity football match Soccer Aid is back! The annual star-studded charity football match returned today, Sunday, June 12, 2022, playing at West Ham’s London Stadium at Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park in Stratford, but not before training sessions at Champneys Tring in Wigginton, North Yorkshire days prior.

There were footballing greats and celebrities involved in this year’s game, and off-pitch the show was presented by UNICEF UK Ambassador Dermot O’Leary, joined by Maya Jama and Lionesses legend Alex Scott returned as pitch-side reporter. Kick-off began at 7:30 p.m. BST and coverage of the event aired on ITV television, with streaming available via ITV website and ITV Hub.

There was even a half-time musical performance from Soccer Aid founder Robbie Williams, who performed his famous hit ‘Angels’ and an appearance from UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador David Beckham.

During arrivals at London Stadium Damian had a short interview and predicted the match result as 4-1 in England’s favor. While on the pitch he further elaborated and claimed England would indeed win it. He was asked if it was a coincidence that England lost without him in the last three years and he said it was one of the biggest coincidences. 😉  View video of that portion here. At the half-time mark the match was tied 1-1 as Damian donned jersey number 66 and played in the second half. He missed a sitter, as he looked certain to score, but dragged the shot wide. Damian looked stunned and gutted! And we were gutted for him. At 84 minutes in, Damian spotted Tom Grennan’s dart into the area but he was offside. Going into tonight’s match the two teams were tied with five wins each after 10 matches, yet this match ended in a 2-2 draw at full-time, going into penalties. World XI scored four penalties and England scored one. The winning Team was World XI, with a final score of 6-3. Sorry Damian! See Damian’s score prediction here.

by Gingersnap | damian-lewis.com | March 22, 2022

Today it was announced that Damian will return for Soccer Aid 2022, joining Team England.

Damian played in the very first Soccer Aid back in 2006 and has gone on to make several subsequent appearances in the match, mainly as a central midfielder.

A source said: “Damian’s had an incredibly hard year after losing Helen but when Soccer Aid approached him about being part of the charity game, he wanted to help out. Damian is a massive Liverpool FC fan and can’t wait to get out on the pitch.”

This year’s celebrity charity match has been moved from Chelsea’s Stamford Bridge to London Stadium, featuring a special half time show from Mr. Soccer Aid himself, UNICEF UK Ambassador, Robbie Williams. Prices starting from £10 for children, £20 for adults and premium from £75. A family of four (2 adults, 2 children) can attend from £60.

Team favorites Usain Bolt, Tom Grennan and Martin Compston will lace up their boots once again to play alongside footballing legends Gary Neville, Jamie Carragher and Patrice Evra. Taking to the pitch for the first time, new signings for 2022 include Alex Brooker, Lucien Laviscount and Liam Payne as captain of the England team.

Damian Lewis Interview: USA Weekend Magazine – March 10 2002

Black Hawk Down, Elvis, Steve McQueen, and Broadway

by Evelyn Poitevent | USA Weekend Magazine |  March 10, 2002

“Band of Brothers” star Damian Lewis, 31, has been touted by everyone from the “New York Times” to “People” magazine as Hollywood’s new golden child. And rightfully so. The British actor — a veteran of London’s Guildhall School (where he studied drama with Ewan McGregor and Joseph Fiennes), the Birmingham Repertory and Royal Shakespeare Company (where he befriended Ralph Fiennes) — has not only proved himself worthy of the stage during the last decade, but has also made his mark on British television (BBC’s “Warriors” and “Hearts and Bones”). “Band of Brothers” brought him to American audiences — and rest assured, that was just the beginning. We caught up with the humorous, fun-loving (yet humble) redhead, who’s currently filming a Stephen King thriller, “Dreamcatcher,” in Canada.
