From The Trader’s Desk: Sabotage! Billions S4 E12 – Season Finale’Cause what you see you might not get
And we can bet so don’t you get souped yet
You’re scheming on a thing that’s a mirage
I’m trying to tell you now it’s sabotage
Sabotage – Beastie Boys

Welcome to the last “From the Trader’s Desk” for Season 4 of Billions. We’ve seen the Good, the Bad, and ultimately, the very Ugly from our favorite characters this season (look for our upcoming “Best of Billions” for this season soon!), and this episode, “Extreme Sandbox” was no different.

Before I get into the episode, I want to say how much I have enjoyed bringing “From the Trader’s Desk” to you all each week. These posts were originally supposed to clear up any “fin-speak” that non-Wall Streeters just didn’t get. In the beginning, there was a lot of it! So much so, that we were adding to our Billions: Glossary on a weekly basis. However, as the show got more and more into the characters and the complexity of their relationships, the financial jargon got less and less. What would I write about? I decided that I would do what I do best: analyze and evaluate. If I can do it with companies I trade, I can do it with the rich characters of Billions. I didn’t know how it would go, but I have gotten some of the best feedback on my analysis posts, so thank you! Continue reading From The Trader’s Desk: Sabotage! Parallel Lines

Those who try to burn him pay
You don’t do that to Johnny Blade
He’s the meanest guy around his town
One look and he will cut you down
Johnny Blade – Black Sabbath

We’re getting closer to the end folks! This penultimate episode of Billions was the perfect set-up for next week’s finale.

Here at the Trader’s Desk, it’s our day job to see patterns, and we saw several parallels to last season’s E11, Kompenso, so let’s discuss! And in keeping with the parallels, I’ve used the same song to start this post as I did last season’s recap of E11 (just a different verse!). I don’t want to break the pattern! From the Trader’s Desk: Billions S4 E10 New Year’s Day – May 31, 2019

Moments in Time

by Lady Trader I Fan Fun with Damian Lewis I May 31, 2019

And so we’re told this is the golden age
And gold is the reason for the wars we wage
New Year’s Day – U2

Hello and welcome to the Trader’s Desk. I know I have said this a few times (and we still have two episodes left) but this may be my favorite episode of the season! From the opening, to getting answers to questions I have had for 4 seasons, this was exactly the episode I needed after last week’s break.

I want to break my post down into two parts: quick observations, and then diving into particular moments. I believe certain moments of “New Year’s Day” are pivotal for some of our favorite characters.

Observations

I could not think of a better opening sequence than the one we were privileged to get this week. The combination of the wintery scenes of my favorite places in downtown Manhattan, accompanied by the unique voice of Bono from one of my favorite bands, U2, was just simply genius. I have had the pleasure of seeing U2 in concert several times, and all I can say is that there are front men, and then there’s Bono.

Taylor buying up shares in the main supplier to Rebecca’s Saler’s stores is a smart move. TMC basically controls the oxygen to the stores now, since Kling Appliances was 63% of Saler’s revenue. Rebecca will try to look for another supplier to buy, but some of the names she mentioned (Samsung, LG) are huge companies. The market cap of Samsung is $272B, and while smaller, the market cap of LG is $4.8B. Neither one are really options for Rebecca, since Saler’s has more debt than cash. It will be very interesting to see how this works, or if Axe can ride to the rescue once again for Rebecca.

Bonnie is now the Axe Cap IR person? This just seems strange. Don’t get me wrong – I love Bonnie, but I truly think she is much better at her Bloomberg trading than out meeting with current and potential clients. Bonnie’s personality is an “acquired” taste, so I’m wondering if this was done to break up her budding relationship with Dollar Bill. As always, Billions doesn’t do things just to do them, so I’m curious to see where this new role takes Bonnie. Continue reading From the Trader’s Desk: Billions S4 E10 New Year’s Day – May 31, 2019

Asia Kate Dillon Tells Us What It’s Like To Be In Bobby Axelrod’s Crosshairs On Billions – March 15, 2019

Axe and Taylor are Each Other’s Most Worthy Adversary and They Know It

by Jason Tabrys | Uproxx | March 15, 2019

For three seasons, we’ve watched Bobby Axelrod (the investment Golden God) and Chuck Rhoades (the power-thirsty lawman) posture, snarl, and scheme while locked in a gloriously intense battle of financial sector cops and robbers with ample nuance and viciousness. In a sense, it (in addition to the butter-smooth line readings and distinct phraseology coming out of the mouth of impish Axelrod consigliere Mike “Wags” Wagner) has allowed the show to create rooting interests amidst the backdrop of ridonculous wealth and seedy political machinations. Themes that we’re all getting a triple helping of in the real world. But in season four, everything is changing… for now.

Introduced in season two, Taylor Mason (Asia Kate Dillon) is the embodiment of the term “does not fuck around.” Direct and hyper-analytical, Taylor climbed the ladder at Axelrod’s company (Axe Capital) and became a force of nature and someone for Axelrod (Axe) to groom… and use. An arrangement that worked for all sides until Axe traded on Mason’s personal relationship with a client (Oscar, as played by Mike Birbiglia), causing Mason to find a door and take a whole lot with them at the end of season three. A move that creates a new rival for Axelrod (Rhoades has own betrayals to contend with, allowing for a detente with Axe) as he and Mason fight for clients and supremacy.

We spoke with Dillon about the fight between Mason and Axe, whether Mason can reclaim their soul while building a rival company, and how the non-binary actor navigates moments where their (also non-binary) character is misgendered for story reasons on the show.

The Biggest Questions for Showtime’s ‘Billions’ Heading Into Season 4 – Dec 11, 2018

Axe’s Fury – Axe’s Gauntlet

by Eric Schaal | Cheat Sheet | December 11, 2018

In some ways, the ending to Season three of Showtime’s Billions was unthinkable. How could Chuck Rhoades, the U.S. attorney who entire existence seems based on the power of his office, proceed without a job? Yet shortly after his downfall, we find him sipping wine with his wife and former arch-nemesis Bobby Axelrod.

Rhoades, played by Paul Giamatti, seems awfully comfortable sharing a bottle with Axe at his table. The same can be said of Axelrod, played by Damian Lewis. After his hedge fund’s star employee launched a rival operation, Axe needed to regroup.

This setup leaves open so many possibilities for the show’s Season four, which arrives in 2019 with at least one new cast member.  The Hollywood Reported revealed Samantha Mathis is joining the cast of the show for Season four. Mathis will play the chief operating officer (COO) of the recently formed Taylor Mason Capital.

Here are the biggest questions for the show and its characters ahead of the upcoming season:

Billions Adds New Character to Season 4 – Aug 27, 2018

A New COO for TM Capital

by Rick Porter | The Hollywood Reporter | August 27, 2018

Taylor Mason Capital is getting some reinforcement in the fourth season of Showtime’s Billions.

Samantha Mathis (The Strain) has joined the series for a season-long arc. She’ll play Sara Hammon, the new COO of Taylor Mason Capital. She’s brought on board by Taylor (Asia Kate Dillon) to help run the newly formed company and protect it — and Taylor — from Axe’s (Damian Lewis) aggression.

Taylor likely has good reason to be concerned, as the third-season finale saw the character leaving Axe Capital to start a new firm — with a few billion dollars in capital Axe thought was headed his way.
