Vogue’s Dream Bond Boys – Aug 13, 2018

Damian Ranks as a 007 Contender, at Least with Vogue

by Katie Berrington and Lauren Milligan | British Vogue | August 13, 2018

British Vogue released a list of dream boys they’d like to see play the next James Bond.

As speculation amped up last week about who will follow in Daniel Craig’s 007 footsteps, Idris Elba sent the rumour mill into overdrive with an “Is he? Isn’t he?” Twitter tease.

“My name’s Elba, Idris Elba,” he posted, sparking mass excitement amongst his followers, before appearing to dismiss the widespread claims by advising people not to believe “the hype”.

Here, we chart the contenders – the likely and the left-field – who could step into the famous spy’s sleek tuxedo for future incarnations of the franchise (when Craig does indeed hang up his Speedos for good).

#3 – Damian Lewis

One of the older candidates in the running at 47, the actor has the gentlemanly air down pat and was an early front runner for the next Bond – particularly thanks to the fervent following he garnered after his acting skills were brought to the masses in Homeland.

An Actor is Always Reinventing Himself Through his Characters: An Interview with Damian Lewis – April 23, 2017

An Actor is Always Reinventing Himself Through His Characters

by Staff | London Calling | April 23, 2017

‘An actor is always reinventing himself through his characters’ - An Interview with Damian Lewis

Having ventured from the hallowed halls of England’s most historic school to the very top of transatlantic television, Damian Lewis is returning to the city – and the stage – of his youth with a starring role in Ian Rickson’s revival of the Edward Albee-penned The Goat, or Who Is Sylvia? at the Theatre Royal Haymarket.

As much as some people may find it a step too far to have a ginger James Bond, Damian Lewis has seen his name thrown into that ring many times. But while with his Old Etonian credentials it may seem like a natural fit, for the past few years the flame-haired thespian has owed his career to starring roles on the other side of the pond.

Damian Lewis on Why He’s Happy to be a Heart-Throb and Those James Bond Rumors – Feb 2, 2017

His blockbuster TV roles have made him a global star but Damian Lewis’s heart will always belong to north London. He speaks to Charlotte Edwardes

Damian Lewis is not as charming as he first seems. And I mean that as a compliment. Sure he can schmooze: he remembers everyone’s name, their kids’ names, their mum’s name — given half a chance he’d ask after hip ops and bunions — and he’s a great giver of bear hugs, back slaps and pumping handshakes. After 10 minutes in the pub where we meet, he has the room eating from his paw. Not because he’s a Hollywood actor, a veritable red-carpet ‘celeb’ with blockbuster TV shows such as Homeland and Billions under his belt, but because he engages everyone. For instance, he identifies the indie rock on the sound system and turns towards the bar, arms wide, crying: ‘Oh my God, who likes The Shins?’ A busboy steps forward and is congratulated. It’s great theatre.

But in truth, Lewis is a bit angry. And no I’m not reducing him to the cliché of the fiery redhead; he says this himself. He’s angry about big things: greed, selfishness, prejudice. But also smaller things, such as bad driving (‘Makes me crazy!’) or the street lighting in Tufnell Park (‘Why can’t we have lovely charming ones like Canonbury?’) or litterbugs (which he would definitely argue was a big thing). ‘I’m not averse to telling people off,’ he says. And do they reply, ‘Hold on aren’t you…?’ ‘Ha! No. It’s more: “Who the hell are you and why are you telling me what to do?”’

The former Homeland star, 45, is occasionally listed alongside the likes of Tom Hardy and Aiden Turner as a potential 007 for the future.

However, in a new interview, he poked fun at the ongoing speculation – and appeared to dampen any hopes that he’ll be next to take the iconic role on.

He said simply: “By the time they make a decision [on Bond] I’ll be dead. So no one need worry any more.”

The actor is reported to have gone on to say that he believes Craig will step into the Bond shoes one more time.

License to Kill Revoked? Damian on Playing Bond – May 5, 2016

License to kill revoked? Damian Lewis reveals he’s had ‘no contact’ with James Bond bosses over the role despite being a favourite to take over from Daniel Craig

By Jj Nattrass For Mailonline – Daily Mail – May 5, 2016

But Damian Lewis has revealed that despite being one of the public’s favoured thespians to play the British secret agent, he’s had no contact with studio executives regarding the films.

Speaking to Shortlist about his future prospects, the 44-year-old Homeland star revealed even though he’d be excited to be in the running for Bond he’s not actively pursuing the iconic role.

When asked if his role as an MI6 agent in new spy-thriller Our Kind Of Traitor was a public audition for the role, Damian revealed that Bond was the furthest thing from his mind while he was playing Hector.

Pressed on the topic of Bond, the actor explained that as far as he was concerned the role wasn’t about impressing 007 bosses, saying: ‘Not on my part, no.’

However, he did explain that it would be ‘exciting’ to be the new incarnation of Ian Fleming’s famous spy. Talking about the prospect of being offered the job, Damian conceeded it would be a thrill to carry a license to kill.

‘Well, it would be very exciting,’ he admitted. ‘But, you know actors never lose the excitement of being offered any job. It’s always exciting when you get the phone call.

However he also explained that he thought there was a ‘slight hysteria’ attached to the role.

Damian Was Third Choice to Play Homeland’s Nick Brody – Jan 12, 2016

Damian Lewis had to fend off Ryan Philippe and Patrick Wilson to play Homeland’s Nicholas Brody

by Sarah Doran – RadioTimes – January 12, 2016

Showrunner Alex Gansa reveals the British actor wasn’t top of the list of Showtime’s potential leading men for the espionage thriller.

He may now be one of TV and film’s most famous redheads but did you know Damian Lewis very nearly missed out on his role as Homeland’s Nicholas Brody?

When casting for the US show began, Lewis wasn’t Showtime’s (the network Homeland debuted on) first choice for the role. In fact, he wasn’t even the second, despite showrunner Alex Gansa’s determination to see him step into Brody’s shoes.

“When we first brought him up, everyone was very negative about the suggestion,” Gansa told The New Yorker. Their hesitation had a lot to do with the failure of Life, a cancelled NBC police procedural drama in which the British actor had played the lead character.

“That carries a pretty big stigma,” Gansa said. “The network really wanted Ryan Phillippe; Patrick Wilson passed. I kept talking about Damian until I got a call from the head of the studio saying, ‘Look, Alex, please do not bring up Damian’s name again.’ Hanging up the phone in my office – I think we were two weeks from the start of principal photography – I was like, Are we going to cast Ryan Phillippe in this role?”

That’s right. A non-Lewis Brody very nearly happened. We know, you guys. We know.

Telegraph Interview: the Homeland star unleashes his inner James Bond for Jaguar

Damian Lewis on the set of 'Desire'

Damian Lewis was last in a desert almost a decade ago. The trip came in the wake of both his acting breakthrough in Band of Brothers, and the death of his mother in a car crash in India.

“The worst thing about that period, though, was losing my Band of Brothers penknife,” he says. This is something of a Lewis trait – making light of something heavy. “I took myself off on my own to Egypt and Jordan with a backpack. And I befriended a Bedouin in the Wadi Rum, who took me camping there. And we got caught in a sandstorm. He was a little fellow called Suleiman. I only realised after I’d left him the next day that he’d nabbed my Band of Brothers penknife. It was very frustrating.” Was this a special memento from the Second World War series, I ask, dedicated to their leading man and perhaps engraved by producers Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks?

“No, it was just a really cool little Swiss Army knife. But yeah,” the Old Etonian continues, “I went off to the Middle East for a month, and I remember infuriating the locals in Luxor playing backgammon. They played it incredibly passionately and incredibly quickly in Egypt – it’s an extraordinary experience. You just heard the constant rattle of dice and chk-chk-chk of the counters. And I used to sit there, really slowly pondering my moves. And one afternoon I had this whole café gathered behind their fella – this wizened old guy with a beard – and they were all just shouting at me, cursing at me, for playing so slowly. Oh, it was great though,” he smiles wistfully. “I played a lot of very stoned backgammon there.”

We’re in a remote Chilean town situated in the highest, driest desert in the world, and Lewis – clad entirely in Burberry – is sitting in a blood-red sports car, impatiently honking at a children’s marching band as he tries to inch his way through them. Someone, or something, is on his tail.

Among the film crew bustling beside him is stunt co-ordinator Daniel Hirst, fresh from working with Tom Cruise on the sci-fi epic All You Need is Kill, and here to help Lewis with action sequences, including one where he smoothly disarms a gangster. Which, given that the character the 42 year-old is playing is supposed to be a well-spoken English chap who delivers luxury sports cars for a living, is not a skill we’d expect to be high on his CV.

I ask Hirst: was Lewis “fight-ready” after two seasons playing a battle-scarred former US marine in Homeland? “Yeah, he was very easy to teach,” the no-nonsense former British military officer shoots back. “When he went into the first move from the dialogue, even though I hadn’t had time to give him a brief, Damian had the step-to-one-side and control-the-weapon routine pretty straight up. So I think he’s probably done that before.”
