Damian Lewis Attends Summer Exhibition Festival for Sir HvH Arts Foundation

Lockdown Exodus and A Brave New World

by Gingersnap | damian-lewis.com | April 13, 2021

Ambassador and now Patron Damian Lewis joined the Sir HvH Arts Foundation Summer Exhibition Festival production in London on Monday, August 30, 2021 for the ‘Lockdown Exodus’ exhibition that celebrated young people’s work in art, music and photography, and a performance by ‘A Brave New World’ visual arts theatre dance production by talented young artists. Throughout the day the project hosted taster workshops with their artists in residence in fashion deconstruction, tie-dye, screen printing, oils, acrylics on canvas, and photography. About a hundred community families gathered to see the musical performances, as well as art and photography produced by youth who had taken part in free sessions funded by donations and Camden Council. Up to 60 youngsters a day had been taking part in projects over the summer.

Ambassadors Sadie Frost and Michael Palin were also in attendance, who mentored young people for a film they made during lockdown called Isolation Stories. Students were also directed by the charity’s artists in residence, Selina Giles and Lily Alice Clark, and actor Peter Youngblood-Hills offered mentoring sessions.

The event was also held to remember former patron Helen McCrory. Debbi Clark, CEO and Founder of Sir HvH Arts Foundation has set up the “McCrory Award” in her honor, which will be dedicated to supporting disadvantaged children and young people who are gifted in their art, yet many do not have access to the resources or training to fulfill their potential. According to Hampstead Highgate Express, Debbi Clark stated Helen would always be a patron of the charity and was still with them “in spirit.”

Damian Lewis: Patron of Ride4Hugo

Family Support: In Memory of Hugo Yaxley and Helen McCrory

by Staff | Ride4Hugo | June 15, 2021 *updated May 03, 2022

Ride4Hugo is in memory of Hugo Yaxley, Damian and Helen’s nephew, who tragically died in a car accident in November, 2020.

Hugo was a big advocate of facing up to mental health issues and changing the stigma attached to it. Ride4Hugo aims to raise funds and awareness for four great charities that were close to both his and Helen’s heart. His Aunt, Helen McCrory, passed away five months after Hugo’s accident.

Uncle Damian, as he was to Hugo, is Ride4Hugo’s patron. Best known for his performances on screen and stage, Damian has also contributed a huge amount of charity work. Most recently he and his late wife Helen McCrory helped raise over £1m for the FeedNHS campaign.

Damian recently reflected on Hugo, stating:

“The recurring theme talking to people about Hugo, is that, for one so young, he leaves an incredible legacy. He truly inspired people of his generation, through his own bravery, to be more confident and open about their mental health. This is an extraordinary thing to have achieved by the age of 20. He’s touched more people in his short life than most do in their longer ones. One great memory is of our family holiday in Mallorca when Hugo perfected and demonstrated (endlessly) the art of “bombing” in the swimming pool. Face down mostly. For ages afterwards, we called him Bomber Yaxley. He became many other fabulous things as he got older but that fearlessness never left him. And he used it to help others. Love you Hugo.”

Below is information about the upcoming bike ride campaigns, the bike routes, and the charities Ride4Hugo supports:

Graffiti Art Project for Sir HvH Arts Foundation – April 13, 2021

Neville the Starfish

by Gingersnap | damian-lewis.com | April 13, 2021

Damian joined the Sir HvH Arts Foundation  graffiti art project in Hampstead Heath for “Neville the Starfish.”  Looks like Neville is getting some purple highlights from our favorite Ginger! Sponsored by Love Camden, the project supported over 96 young people in the community to be able to express their talented skills.

Youngsters used graffiti to transform a bridge linking Hampstead Heath and Gospel Oak. Children aged 8 to 18 spray painted the pathway leading from Savernake Road, as part of a charity scheme to encourage creativity and community engagement. The murals feature two steam trains made up of characters and creatures imagined by the children, drawing on the mystical and the magical.

BGC/GFI Charity Day 2019 – Sept 11, 2019

On the Trading Floor for CureEB and Sir Hubert von Herkomer Arts Foundation

by Gingersnap | damian-lewis.com | September 11, 2019

Damian makes trading look easy as he participates in the 15th annual BGC Charity Day 2019 on Wednesday, September 11, 2019 in London, England for CureEB and the Sir Hubert von Herkomer Arts Foundation.

First up was GFI Charity Day where Damian hit the trading floor for CureEB. CureEB is passionate about medical research and clinical trials that will help lead to treatments and a cure for Epidermolysis Bullosa, a severe genetic skin condition that leads to blistering and skin loss at the slightest friction. Children with the condition are often referred to as ‘Butterfly Children’ as their skin is said to be as fragile as a butterfly’s wings.

Damian the Husband: Organizing Road Trips, Planning Surprise Birthday Parties

by Gavanndra Hodge | The Telegraph | August 9, 2019

She’s straight-talking, hates housework, dresses to kill, and lives life her way – convention be damned. Turns out Helen McCrory has plenty in common with her badass Peaky Blinders character Polly.

Helen McCrory, the multiple-award winning actor, is holding what looks like a moist slice of turkey. ‘What is that?’ I ask. ‘It’s a face mask, darling. £1.99 from Superdrug,’ she says, rubbing it against her neck. ‘It’s going to make me look like a teenager.’

We are standing outside a café on the Regent’s Canal, cyclists and prams whizzing by. McCrory is wearing a floral tea dress, silver Zadig & Voltaire boots, sunglasses and a VIP wristband from a Bob Dylan concert she went to, five days ago. ‘I am never taking it off,’ she says.

There is a sort of rock-star swagger to Helen McCrory, 50, a charismatic, don’t-give-a-damn cool with her chipped red nails and posh-voiced sweariness. She likes to party, to wear top hats and vintage frocks, and there is the inevitable doubling of glamour that comes from her marriage to the actor Damian Lewis (Brody from Homeland, more recently Bobby Axelrod in Billions), with whom she lives in a tall, narrow house in Tufnell Park with their children Manon, 12, and Gulliver, 11.

But what is most thrilling about McCrory is not the husky wit, the famous friends (‘Have you seen Andrew [Scott] doing Present Laughter? Now that is how you do Coward’) or the fact that she ran an acid jazz club in Islington one summer in the early 1990s – it is her talent.

She brings a furious precision and intensity to the roles she takes: Medea and ‘Lady M’ on stage; on screen, Anna Karenina, Narcissa Malfoy, Cherie Blair and the gangster matriarch Aunt Polly in Peaky Blinders, the fifth season of which is soon to start on BBC One. Critics compete for the glowing adjectives when describing her performances – ‘superb’, ‘majestic’, ‘simply wonderful’. In 2017 she was awarded an OBE for services to drama.

Photographing the Famous – Oct 14, 2018

One Button Press, One Camera Shutter Click, and You Get This:

by Jemma Dodd | Olympus Magazine | Issue 59

Debbi Clark has had work featured in Vogue, Homme, and Tatler, photographed the likes of Kate Moss and Damian Lewis and set up her own charity. We speak to the woman who’s capable of it all…

When did you become interested in photography?
It was when I was studying fashion and design at St. Martin’s College when I fell in love with photography. I used to photograph landscapes, capturing patterns in trees, flowers, grass picturing shapes, shadows and formations in clouds. I became so obsessed with how fascinating it was playing with light that I wanted to learn the technical side to really bring my images to life. I then went on to LCP and studied photography and printing. My first camera was the Olympus PEN-F 35mm film camera, which I still love and use.

You’ve photographed the likes of Kate Moss, Paul Weller and Damian Lewis. How did your journey into photographing such big names begin?
As a photographer, I love taking portraits. I have been extremely fortunate to have photographed some of the most iconic people in the world, including Kate Moss, Paul Weller, Damian Lewis and Helen McCrory, which began when I founded Sir Hubert von Herkomer Arts Foundation, a charity that I am CEO of. The charity supports young people by inspiring them in the arts, giving them lifelong skills that they can develop their artistic passions through. I work with many models, actors and singers on commissions, and because I work with them as a professional photographer, I was able to approach many of my artists to ask if they would let me take their portrait and exhibit each year to fundraise for Sir HVH Arts Foundation, supporting my passion in the arts and passing it on to young people to encourage and nurture through the arts.

Of all the people you’ve photographed, what was your most memorable shoot?
I have many memories and stories as each time I take a portrait there is always something that happens to make that portrait so special. I do remember the time when Helen McCrory phoned me and said, “Damian is shaving off the tash, beard and sideburns today.” Being such a passionate advocate and patron of Sir HVH Arts Foundation, Helen McCrory managed to weave her magic, and off I went to take a portrait of Damian Lewis dressed in a blue denim shirt, with his amazing mop of flame colored hair, tash and sideburns. I remember thinking at the time that the ‘Brut 33’ 70’s style clashed with the blue denim, ginger hair and green glass as I stood above Damian shooting directly down from above – what a color contrast. We shot this image within a 30-minute window – as I rushed out to meet Damian at Swiss Cottage on the grass banks of the sports centre, the skies were clouding over and the rain was imminent. I had my Olympus PEN-F and 45mm lens attached and my LEDGO travel light held high above to fill in as daylight for the lack of light as the clouds were darkening up ready to let go. We managed to shoot two fantastic final images and Damian, Helen and I chose this featured photo as the firm favorite.
