“I’ve never known anyone able to enjoy life as much”

The star, who has died of cancer at 52, was a brilliant actress and an even better person, writes her husband.
As I sit down to write this, I can hear Helen shouting from the bed, “Keep it short, Damian, it’s not about you.”
I’ll try, but on a weekend when the papers, rightly, will be paying their respects to the Duke of Edinburgh, thousands of others around the world have been remembering m’Duchess, my Little One, royalty in her own right. And I’d like to throw in my tuppence worth …
When I say “royalty”, I am of course referring to the esteem in which Helen is held in our business. Her nickname to many was Dame Helen (apologies, Dame Helen), and although we’ll never know now whether that would have become a reality, I think secretly, we do know.
Damian joined the Sir HvH Arts Foundation graffiti art project in Hampstead Heath for “Neville the Starfish.” Looks like Neville is getting some purple highlights from our favorite Ginger! Sponsored by Love Camden, the project supported over 96 young people in the community to be able to express their talented skills.
Youngsters used graffiti to transform a bridge linking Hampstead Heath and Gospel Oak. Children aged 8 to 18 spray painted the pathway leading from Savernake Road, as part of a charity scheme to encourage creativity and community engagement. The murals feature two steam trains made up of characters and creatures imagined by the children, drawing on the mystical and the magical.

As Billions returns, the actor explains why he isn’t interested in playing 007 – or bothered about turning the big 5-0.
Damian Lewis’s next birthday is the big 5-0: at the risk of seeming indelicate, does it mean people will stop asking if he’s the next James Bond? The actor, star of Homeland, Wolf Hall and Billions, hoots gruffly down the phone. “Well, no! You’re proof of the rule!”
Oh dear. Sorry. I had read this summer he really was dismissing all chances of becoming 007, so it only seemed fair to check. Talking from his home in north London, which he shares with his wife Helen McCrory and their two children, he is happy(ish) to clarify again.
“I don’t want to play Bond. I’m ambitious for different things,” he sighs. “I don’t know who they’ll choose – he’ll be fantastic, or she will be fantastic. But I don’t want to play Bond – even if I was asked!”
On Tuesday 13th October, actor and producer, Damian Lewis, best known for his appearances in Band of Brothers, Billions and Homeland, joined Simon Mayo to speak about his experiences as an Ambassador for The Prince’s Trust.
“To work with a charity that was targeting very specifically young people in this country, and grabbing them at the point where they might take a wrong turning, or might have just taken a wrong turning, but, it’s still an opportunity to steer them back on the right course, was brilliant.”
Lewis also spoke of Leon McGhie, who was awarded the Prince’s Trust Homesense Young Achiever award in 2019, who had his head turned through gang culture, and had been stabbed 5 times. “He approached the Prince’s Trust, took on their course which is called Team, not realising that the course was delivered by the MET police, and he turned his life around.”

The Wedding Singer

Damian Lewis played the guitar alongside wife Helen McCrory at their friends’ wedding on September 24, 2020.
He showcased his musical side as he pulled out a guitar to perform at the wedding, held at Kensington and Chelsea Register Office in London on Thursday.
The Once Upon a Time…in Hollywood star, 49, was joined by his actress wife Helen McCrory, 52, as they celebrated the occasion by singing along to a series of classic Irish tracks. Helen proudly held up the Irish and Celtic lyrics for Damian to follow along.
As ceremonies and receptions in England set to be capped at 15 people from Monday as part of new coronavirus measures to curb a surge in cases. The screen stars’ pals were able to narrowly avoid the new restrictions as they marked their milestone with their loved ones.
Prime Minister Boris Johnson added that funeral services would be exempt from the limitations, with the maximum number of mourners remaining at 30.
Damian couldn’t contain his delight as he congratulated the newlyweds while strumming the strings of his instrument. Helen’s right arm was held up in a sling, nearly a year after she used a scarf to support the same limb during a night out.
