The Billion Dollar Reference – March 14, 2019

Showtime Series Billions Uses the Dynamic Duo of Ovi and Nicky as an Analogy in Their Upcoming Season

by Taryn Bray | NHL.com | March 13, 2019

When you start to be incorporated into television shows, you’re probably doing something right – as is the case with Capitals stars Alex Ovechkin and Nicklas Backstrom.

Tuesday night while appearing on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, actor Damian Lewis who stars in the Showtime series Billions, previewed the upcoming season with a short clip.

In that clip? He uses an Ovechkin/Backstrom reference as an analogy during argument with a co-worker. You can watch the video below (clip starts at 7:23).

Backstrom has assisted Ovechkin on 247 goals and it’s no secret the pair is one of the most prolific scoring duos the sport has ever seen, so using them as a way to convey a point is smart by the writers of the show.

The dynamic duo made their on-ice debut together in 2007 when Backstrom signed an entry-level contract.

Classic Billions Drama of High-Stakes Wheeling and Dealing

by Stephen Spignesi | New Haven Register | March 13, 2019

Showtime’s hit series “Billions” returns March 17 for its fourth season at its new time of 9 p.m. and opens with a sticky (yet irresistible) dramatic conundrum: At the end of last season, a few too many loyal Axe Capital employees had morphed into enemies and competitors — and hundreds of millions and, yes, billions of dollars are now at stake.

If the first four episodes are harbingers of the rest of the season, Season 4 — in addition to delivering the classic “Billions” drama of high-stakes wheeling and dealing — is going to be more fun than ever. In this season, for example, we get to see Chuck Rhoades (New Haven’s own Paul Giamatti) chair dance and (sort of) moonwalk, and we watch gender non-binary Taylor Mason (Asia Kate Dillon) strut in a short black dress, long black wig and heels (Wags (David Costabile) opines: “Kate Jackson hot”).

Showtime’s Billions: Everyone Has A Score To Settle In Season 4 – March 13, 2019

“Everyone’s Hands are Dirty as the Worlds of Politics and Privilege Merge”

by Dana Feldman | Forbes | March 13, 2019

It’s that time of year! Spring is in the air and Billions is returning for its highly-anticipated fourth season this Sunday. The motto for the new season: When everyone is out for revenge, no one is safe.

Billions is one of the network’s top drama serieswith season three averaging 5 million weekly viewers across platforms. The season three premiere was its highest-rated ever, with the March 2018 debut up 23% from season two. And, the series grew throughout its second season on Sunday nights by more than 35% from premiere-to-finale.

Embroiled in a dark, sordid underworld of power, corruption, betrayal and revenge, Billions hooks viewers with the dramatic lengths its characters are willing to go when it comes to getting what they want. Simultaneously, the show remains reflective of the current times in which we live wherein money, greed, ambition and justice collide.

Alex Ovechkin and Nicklas Backstrom Used as Metaphor in Billions – March 12, 2019

Hockey Gets An Assist From Billions

by Cara Bahniuk and Elizabeth Kong | Russian Machine Never Breaks | March 12, 2019

Alex Ovechkin and Nicklas Backstrom have made a perfect pair on the ice since 2007, combining for some magical plays. The two go together like ham and cheese, like peanut butter and jelly, and the combination of Ovechkin and Backstrom is now so iconic that they are used to make the perfect analogy on the Showtime TV show, Billions.

In a preview of the upcoming season, Damian Lewis’ character Bobby “Axe” Axelrod references Ovechkin’s goals off Backstrom’s assists as an analogy during an argument.

Axe argues that Ovechkin’s prolific scoring is because Backstrom shares the puck. Actress Sarah Stiles’ character Bonnie Barella shoots back that Ovi has the skill to put his shots into the net, unlike her incompetent coworker.

‘Billions’ and ‘The Good Fight’ Tackle Trump Era in Contrasting Ways – March 12, 2019

Decadent Backdrop of the Lifestyles of the .001-Percent Bracket

by Brian Lowry | CNN | March 12, 2019

Situated in worlds of politics and privilege, power and corruption, “Billions” and “The Good Fight” each play to top-of-mind liberal concerns in the Trump era. Yet the Showtime series feels more compelling by tangentially making its case, whereas the CBS All Access drama loses something by leaning directly into an anti-Trump stance, to the point of bashing the viewer over the head with it.

“Billions” is embarking on its fourth season, while “The Good Wife” spinoff begins its third. In essence, the “Billions” finale shuffled the show’s structure and loyalties, creating parallel battles for power while turning one-time adversaries Bobby “Axe” Axelrod (Damian Lewis), the billionaire hedge fund manager, and former U.S. attorney Chuck Rhoades (Paul Giamatti) into unlikely if slightly wary allies.

Spoiler-Free Review of Billions Season 4 – March 12, 2019

New Backstabbing Plots and Plenty of F-Bombs Abound in the Latest Season of Showtime’s Popular Drama

by Andrew Husband | Den of Geek | March 11, 2019

Three seasons in, Showtime’s popular drama series Billions tends to operate in one of two ways. Either the main characters finally put their grandiose plans for revenge into action and achieve the desired results, or these heavily-plotted exercises in vengeance quickly transform into egregious self-owns perpetrated by the very people they were trying to put one over. This is precisely what happened to longtime rivals Chuck Rhoades (Paul Giamatti) and billionaire hedge fund manager Bobby “Axe” Axelrod (Damian Lewis) at the end of season three, and they’re both furious about it.

Cue Billions season four, which sees the ex-U.S. Attorney and the billionaire hedge fund manager casting their animosity for one another aside in order to seek revenge against the very people they were initially trying to destroy (but who ultimately destroyed them instead). In Rhoades’ case, it’s U.S. Attorney General Waylon “Jock” Jeffcoat (Clancy Brown) and Bryan Connerty (Toby Leonard Moore), who turned his plot to oust Jock against him. As for Axelrod, it’s all about beating former employee-turned-competitor Taylor Amber Mason (Asia Kate Dillon), whose alliance with the Russian oligarch Grigor Andolov (John Malkovich) is causing problems.

LI’s Surprising Role in Showtime’s Billions – March 7, 2019

Billions: Baseline Axioms

by Verne Gay | Newsday | March 7, 2019

If “Billions” — which returns March 17 for a fourth season (Showtime, 9 p.m.) — was a board game, it would seem to need a set of operating rules, or principles. But which ones? Superficially, “Billions” might seem like just another high-finance procedural built on malice, treachery and greed.

What’s principle got to do with it?

But as fans know, the beauty of this intricate series lies in the details and in those very rules of the game which — even if they are unwritten — tend to organize them.

So, to sort those out and reorient you back to what should be another compulsively watchable season — the first four episodes of this series about ruthless financier Bobby Axelrod (Damian Lewis) were available for review, and yes, they are terrific — we’ve come up with some baseline axioms:
