by Staff | Den of Geek | December 31, 2019

A new year is upon us, so what better time to take a look back at our favourite films of the last 12 months? That’s right, it’s Den Of Geek’s annual movies of the year countdown, as voted for by our writers.

The rules? Well, eligible movies had to have been released in the UK in 2019 – and streaming exclusives such as feature-length Netflix and Amazon Prime originals were included. We asked each of our writers to vote for their top five films, ranked on a points-based system, and then collated the entries to come up with our final list.

So, the votes have been counted and verified and we can now reveal the results. Here are the films that the Den Of Geek writers voted as the top 10 movies of the year…

Damian and Helen Enjoy Evening at the Theatre – Sept 29, 2019

Cracked: Mental Illness and Addiction

by Gingersnap | damian-lewis.com | September 29, 2019

Damian and Helen were in attendance for One Voice: Cracked on Sunday, September 29, 2019 at the Old Vic Theatre in London. Despite an apparent injury with her arm in a sling, Helen performed on stage as Damian supported from the audience.

Comedian, writer, actor and presenter Russell Brand curated the evening described as a night of seven one-off solo performances written in response to the growing conversation and changing attitudes around mental health and addiction.

One Voice is a series of newly written monologues, spoken word and song from leading writers and performed by acclaimed actors – theatre in its rawest form. Without scenery, costume, and with nothing to rely on but words, One Voice reminds us what a single voice can do.

Performers included Russell Brand, Scarlett Curtis, Mr Gee, Denise Gough (People, Places & Things, Angels in America) and Helen McCrory (Peaky Blinders, MotherFatherSon), with music from multi award-winning trumpeter Alison Balsom.

Writers for Cracked were Russell Brand (Recovery: Freedom from our Addictions, Re:Birth); Scarlett Curtis (Curator of Feminists Don’t Wear Pink & other lies and It’s Not Ok to Feel Blue & other lies, co-founder of Pink Protest); Lena Dunham (Girls, Not That Kind of Girl); Mr Gee (Rhyme & Reason, ‘Poet Laureate’ on The Russell Brand Show); Dr. Gabor Maté (In the Realm of Hungry Ghosts: Close Encounters with Addiction); Matthew Perry (The End of Longing, Friends) and Kate Tempest (The Bricks That Built the Houses, Let Them Eat Chaos).

Who’s Who in Once Upon a Time…in Hollywood: A Character Guide – Aug 3, 2019

The True Story of Once Upon a Time in…Hollywood Characters

by Rebecca Alter | Vulture | August 2, 2019

Warning: spoilers ahead.

Quentin Tarantino plays fast and loose with historical revisionism like he’s a kid left alone with action figures, or a Harry/Louis slash-fic writer drowning in AO3 tags. He takes a piece of history that’s captured his imagination, creates a Mary Sue or two to beat the boogeymen at the boss level, and poof! His avenging avatars kill Hitler, save Sharon Tate, and burn down one more plantation blighting the earth. Like Inglourious Basterds before it, Tarantino populates his ninth film, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, with real figures alongside more reality-adjacent ones. So for those of us (all of us) less versed in his brand of fanboy ephemera, here’s a map to the stars, real and pretend, in OUATIH.

Tarantino Might Team with Netflix For a 4-Hr Cut of Once Upon a Time…in Hollywood – Aug 3, 2019

More McQueen Scene On Our Screen?

by Steffanie Tan | Pedestrian | August 3, 2019

Today in rumoursville, Quentin Tarantino might re-team with Netflix to brings fans an extended cut of Once Upon A Time … In Hollywood.

In an interview on the The Mutuals podcast, via Complex, OUATIH star Nicholas Hammondsaid there are talks of a “four-hour Netflix version”, which sounds pretty standard for Tarantino. The theatrical version clocks in at two hours and 45 minutes.

Netflix recently turned Tarantino’s 2015 film The Hateful Eight into a mini-series called The Hateful Eight: Extended Version, which is pretty much four episodes that are all almost an hour long each. Unfortunately, it appears it’s only available on the US version of the streaming service… for now.

According to Hammond, there were a lot of scenes Tarantino shot that couldn’t make it into the film because “there simply wasn’t enough room.”

“I think they’re talking about doing the same [as The Hateful Eight],” he continued. “There are some actors like Tim Roth, wonderful actors, who never even made it into the film. I mean, their entire roles got cut … Actors, who are really, really first class actors, and they went and shot their scenes and I’m sure they’re wonderful scenes but they’re not in the movie.”

“The Netflix version will be great too,” he added.

This bit of the interview begins around the 22-minute and 10-second mark.
